Shaun Alexander cut by Seahawks

KJR-AM is reporting that running back Shaun Alexander has been told that the Seahawks will release him today.

No one with the team has confirmed this yet, but the move would not be surprising. Alexander's fate with the team was pretty much sealed when running backs Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett were signed in free agency.

There was a report last month that Alexander was being released. But he was still recovering from the sugery on the left wrist that bothered him all last season, so he could not be released until the wrist healed.

I hate to say this, because I really do love #37, both as a player and person (I hope you know what I'm sayin', and NOT sayin':biggrin, but...

The shelf life for a NFL back is so short, and the position is one that's relitively easy to fill. #37 hasn't been the same for a couple of years now. I can't blame the Seahawks for releasing him.

He would be better suited at this point in his career to be a third down back somewhere, or retire.

There will be plenty of teams that would love to have his services, and he will land with one of them. No one will allow him to be the feature back, but he could see a good bit of carries nevertheless. Just to name a few off of the top of my head:

Oakland Raiders
Chicago Bears
New York Jets
New York Giants
Houston Texans
Carolina Panthers
Dallas Cowboys
San Diego Chargers

That's not an all-inclusive list, mind you, but it is a general list of teams that need another running back to get a fairly decent number of carries, and all of the aforementioned groups have been looking at tailbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Titans could very well use another tailback, and it was an omission on my part to not list them. The Titans are also a good bit under the cap, so they have a few bucks floating around to get him. The interesting part about the Titans is that they may be a location draw to Alexander. He grew up in Kentucky, and he played college ball in Alabama, so playing in Tennessee would put him right in the middle of his childhood and college homes.

If they had their preferences, the Titans would spend a draft pick on one of the good tailbacks in this very deep draft class at tailback. Unfortunately, they have so many pressing needs at other positions that those guys will likely all be gone by the time they can afford to spend a pick on a tailback. They will spend their first three picks on a wide receiver (probably round one) and the next two on defensive linemen to replace Odom, LaBoy, and likely the outgoing Haynesworth (FA in 2009). And I'm afraid there won't be many viable guys left in the fourth round and below.

As a result, Alexander may be a decent short-term option for them, if he can be had at the right price.

This can't be a surprise to anyone, least of all Shaun. He's had a great career - its just too bad that the Seahawks let their OL go like they did. If they hadn't done that he probably would have set even more records.

But I doubt this is his last stop - he'll go someplace else and have another couple of seasons of productive service.

I would love to see Shaun end up working the sidelines for some network. He has the personality, voice and intelligence to be as good of a broadcaster as he was a player.

I didn't realize that Chris Brown had signed with the Texans.

The only problem with Shaun Alexander signing with the Titans is the fact that they are the TENNESSEE Titans. Anyone else missing that fact? I hate any and all things Tennessee. Of all of my exes, the one I miss the least was the one from Tennessee, but at least she was a Bama fan. I loathe Tennessee. The Titans could have 22 starters from the U of A and I still could not pull for them. (sorry bamanut_aj ) I don't even like the Smokey Mnts. If there is no tree line, you can't call it a mountain. I know I've offended some good people from the state of Tennessee, all I can say is I'm sorry that you're from that state

While I'm not disagreeing with you, don't be surprised to see the Titans go defense in round one, then pick up receivers with the next two picks, or through trades. They have a history of being burned by first round receivers; whether they drafted them or traded for them.

The Titans haven't done well at receiver in a long time now, but to be fair they really haven't drafted wide receivers either. Only one time since they officially became the Titans have they spent a first or second round draft pick on a receiver, and that was in 2003 when they picked up Tyrone Calico in the late second round.

Historically speaking, the Titans under Fisher have tried to develop receivers with late round draft picks, and also sign free agent receivers, and to be quite frank, that just hasn't worked well for the most part. That's actually one of the reasons I think they will go with a receiver in the first round this year.

Either way, though, I think the point remains that we are looking at the Titans taking defensive linemen and receivers in the first three rounds, and not a tailback. As a result, Alexander may be an option.

A lot will probably depend on how highly they value Chris Henry, the second round pick from a year ago. He is suspended for the first four games of 2008 for a violation of substance abuse policy -- non-performance enhancing drug violation -- and the Titans current opinion on him will make a big impact on how things will play out.

Also, another couple of teams that could be contenders for Alexander's services: The Bengals and the Lions.

And you all hating the Titans just because they're in TN is just a bit odd. I can't grasp a hold of that one...I mean look at my name. If I can deal with it, anbody can.

At least be consistent: Do you hate all the Bama fans from their too? I'm a TENNESSEE Bama Fan. Surely, you don't hate me? bamanut? Jack Daniels? et al?

In all fairness, I know many people who absolutely refused to drink Jack Daniels on gamedays because of its Tennessee heritage. And that long predates all of the recent NCAA / Fulmer / Means drama. I knew a lot of people that would drink Jim Beam or Crown Royal on gamedays for that very reason.

With a 'Bama grad now master distiller in Lynchburg, I imagine that will change, but nevertheless it was an issue for along period of time.

I just hate things with the word Tennessee in them. If they were the Nashville Titans, then it wouldn't sound so bad. :biggrin:

Seriously though, I'm willing to bet 90%-95% of UT fans are also Titans fans. I just can't see myself rooting for the same team as the majority of UT fans.

Just think about Woody Hayes and his hatred of Michigan. He wouldn't even stop at gas stations in the state of Michigan because he didn't want to contribute even 1 cent to their economy. But that didn't mean he hated PEOPLE from Michigan. He regularly went and got recruits from Michigan as often as he could. Love the people, hate the state. I don't like Woody or OSU, but I like that attitude haha.

Well...since the thread already appears to be hi-jacked...Maker's is my poison of choice in most instances. Jack'll do in a pinch. Jim Beam is horrible; however, Jim Beam Black is pretty darn good. When I'm looking to splurge, Knob Creek, and Bookers Rock!

Now, to try to bring it back to the subject. Other than the playoffs a couple of years back, I don't think I've ever seen 37 play an NFL game. I'm glad he played for Bama. He was exceptionally gifted and contributed to making an exceptionally dark period for Bama football, just a bit brighter. However, I do not share the warm fuzzies that most Bama fans have for him.

I never thought about JD being made in Tennessee or cared because I am a Wild Turkey man and didn't like JD to begin with. But now that you mention that, there could have been some subliminal something going in my mind as to why I don't like JD, LOL!

It is now official. The Seahawks have cut Shaun Alexander, and filed the appropriate paperwork with the league.

Shaun Alexander's career with the Seattle Seahawks is now over.

Because he got stuck in Seattle, the media machine (primarily in the east) almost ignored Sean. If he had been playing for any decent team east of the Mississippi river, Sean would have been more of a household name.
I always had respect for the man because he stood up for decency and set a great example for young people.
His years at Alabama were as good as it gets. He literally carried the team for a couple of those Dubose years.
