No, the lockers have the numbers of the players with that number that have been All American listed on them. That’s enough. No need to take numbers away. Bama would have run out of numbers long ago!

Maybe something like a ring of honor would suffice. Maybe stautes for the Heisman winners, but we all know a number would never be retired. The BOT would change BDS to NSF@BDS before that happens

This topic comes up pretty much every off-season. Two days in is a bit unusual, but it would have been posted sooner or later.

My position has been for some time, and still is, I’m good with having to earn numbers. But we don’t retire any.

Offhand, I’d make:
3 — Tiffin as PK
12 — Numerous at QB
22 — Musso and numerous others at RB
34 — Bryant (reserved for a walk-on)
54 — LeeRoy and numerous others at ILB and OL
57 — Stephenson at C
73 — Hannah at OL
75 — Barrett Jones at OL
82 — Ozzie and others at WR
All numbers not already designated, which belonged to Heisman winners. Right now, 2 and 6 (Henry and Smith). Ingram’s 22 already designated.

All earned, voted on by players and staff, based on performance across the nine months incorporating off-season conditioning, spring practice, A-Day, and pre-season camp.

Subject to a couple of limitations:
1. Numbers are awarded for one season only. The fact that you earned the number this year has no bearing on whether you get it next year. You have to earn it again.

2. Not every number is awarded every year. If no player eligible for the number performs to the necessary standard, it‘s just not awarded that year.

So sez me.

No and for the same reason we don't put stickers on helmets. This is a TEAM sport.

Nope.

Numbers are actually a recruiting tool. No need in limiting yourself. Do a ring of honor around the stadium (though we’d run out of room fast). Something like that.
Agree. And, if anyone remembers, Derrick Henry’s high school number was 2. But, it wasn’t available when he first arrived, he got it later.
