Re: Shula offered Hurricanes OC job...

Agreed, but a bad move if he ever wants to be a head coach again.
Depends - he can go straight from where he is to OC in the NFL without difficulty. From there, any job is a possibility. He is an NFL guy. If your point is that he has to be a coordinator to be considered for a HC position, you are probably correct - but his next shot may be his last shot at being anything but a QB coach, so he needs to be patient and choose wisely...

Re: Shula offered Hurricanes OC job...

Good move by Shula. He definitely is a better qb coach than he is an OC.
Agreed . Plus , how long will Shannon last ? 2 more seasons might be the end of his ride .
The kind of decision you make when you don't need any more money.
Must be that silver spoon . Unless you're Ric Flair . He claims his was golden :p_eyes:

Mike Shula has been the offensive coordinator under Tony Dungy with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and for all general purposes he was also his own offensive coordinator while at Alabama. Mike was also interviewed for the Miami Dolphin HC job which was vacated by Nick Saban but Miami hired Cam Cameron instead, wouldn't that have been a crazy twist Saban and Shula swap jobs.

I have it on good authority that Shula turned down the job because Shannon wouldn't let Shula bring in Bob Connelly to coach the OL. ;)

Seriously, though, what the hell was Shannon thinking?

As for Mike Shula's interview for the Miami job, that was pretty much a courtesy interview to appease Don.

Is Shula going to be at the Senior Bowl? IIRC seems I heard somewhere that Jacksonville will be the south coaching squad in Mobile. If so, he and JPW will be reunited.

Personally, I'd think Shula a better fit for the pro game than college. I think a lot of his decisions at Bama were 'pro' driven and hurt him. (Like the Arkansas loss when Tiff was having a bad day and Shula played for a FG (over and over) to 'win' it.)

I have tremendous respect for Shula! Also great appreciation for his taking the HC position at Bama when he did. It's easy to forget the situation our program was in at that point in time. Mike gave it his best shot and IMO did OK his first 2 or 3 years, given the situation. Clearly there were aspects of the program that suffered (e.g. S&C) and ultimately a change was needed... but my hat's off to Mike for taking the job and doing the best he could with it.

Hope he continues to do well in the pro ranks and has a rewarding career.

Tampa Bay did not score very much when Shula was there with Dungy. The defense was all that did anything for them. Jacksonville QB's haven't shown me much the last two years either.

OK I wont beat a dead horse, we hired him but he didn't do all he could have (imho) to produce a winning team. I've moved on so kudos to Mal for doing what had to be done.

I have never, and will never bash on Mike Shula. He was inexperienced, yet led our team with class while it was going through one of our toughest times. I won't hold anything "the Don" said against Mike, Mike's a Bama guy and I appreciate that fact.

Was he a great HC? No, but you guys act like we were loaded with talent!???? Dog him out for the jumbo package? People sure like the jumbo package when it works (Mt Cody at FB anyone?).

I think CMS will be an excellent OC in the NFL and one day maybe even a darn good HC. RTR!
