SI picks the top 5 fight songs in college football .....LOL

I got upset when I read their pick for the top 5......

Top 5.

1. "The Victors," University of Michigan

2. "Anchors Aweigh," U.S. Naval Academy

3. "Boomer Sooner," University of Oklahoma.

4. "Rocky Top," University of Tennessee

5. "Notre Dame Victory March," Notre Dame

then I started to read some of the replys to the article.

Take Rocky Top off the list. Much like any Top 40 radio station, they have killed a good song by playing it ALL THE TIME!!!!! The vols are only matched by the cocky, arrogant, not nearly as good as they think they are, helmet clads morons from USC. They ramble that stupid tune over and over. Their QG throws an interception and those idiots play-on. No wonder the words to the song "This is the only song we know"...

While it's funny that Tennessee was one of the first songs singled out. I got better.

apparently, there is no texas love up in the house today: Texas Fight, baby! even those silly aggies have a fun fight song, though i can't remember what it's called...

But I think the best reply was this one.

the list is a joke.....not having USC in the top 2 makes no sense...only one of the most storied teams/bands/fight song of any division 1 team.

Why would Boomer Sooner make this list? Their mascot, by definition, is someone who broke the law. Is it any wonder why they have attracted people like Barry Switzer, Brian Bosworth, Charles Thompson, and now Rhett Bomar. Please take them off the list.

So how did they arrive at that list?

Well, I'll go ahead and guess. Some idiot in a cubicle at SI spent about 15 minutes of an entire day doing something as worthless as that to justify all that they were paying him, and he just happened to not think about USC during those 15 minutes. Thats about it.

Cause pretty much everybody I know thinks the Trojan fight song is the best in college football, bar none.

And sure Rocky Top is a good song. I just hate the bastards who sing it.

Yeah, I would like to 2nd the point that Rocky Top isn't their fight song, its just another tune they use to play that got popular. How does their real fight song go, not really sure?

How about Georgia Tech. Check the words out, all 3 verses. They are pretty good.

Three reasons a fight song is good:
1. Its a catchy tune, like ND's and Michigan's
2. Has words that tell you about that team, like GT and Bama's
3. People sing along to it in the stands, like Bama and Auburn's.

How many schools actually sing their school song during the game? I've never been to a Notre Dame football game...but I don't know if I have ever heard the words sung to their fight song. Yes, it is catchy, and I personally love it because my high school used the same song, but do the fans sing the words at the games? The same thing kinda goes for UT. Rocky Top isn't the fight song, like others have said, plus they only sing "Rocky Top, you'll always be home sweet home to...good 'ol Rocky Top, wooo, Rocky Top Tennessee!" They never sing any of the other words in the song.

Just wondering. Like I said...I'm fond of the song anyway because it's what we used at my HS. I think most Catholic high schools use that song actually.

Those four are without argument in my opinion.

The 5 spot COULD go to Boomer Sooner...I could also see an argument for "Touchdown, Fight On State!" from PSU, "On Brave old Army Team" from Army, "Falcon Fight" from Air Force, or even "Yea Alabama" before Rocky Top. Without a doubt, Rocky Top does not deserve top 20.

They also have the best bands in the nation. I remember how floored I was back in 99 in the MDB when I saw Michigan at the Orange Bowl. We were lining up to do the Orange Bowl parade and we kinda had a mini battle of the bands. Our band played, it was solid as usual I was thinking "take that!" and then Michigan played hail to the victors with a band half the size of ours (in weight and size) and just blew us out of the water. The sound was crisp, in tune, and balanced. Then came halftime. Michigan's band members were in shape, no big fatties like we got in the MDB. In fact from what one Michigan person said, they have a physical requirement they all have to meet and while MDB members get paid to be in the band, Michigan members actually pay to be in their band. Michigan IMHO is the BEST band in the nation. While the cocky arrogant wankers at USC are a distant 2nd or 3rd.

While this post may seem a bash to the MDB, I still believe we have a top 5 band in the nation, just nothing as good as Michigan.

Not to venture too far from the topic...

For MDB members past and current: is there a reason why the band never plays the Are You From Dixie & Alabama Jubilee stand tune? I've only ever heard it in recordings. Granted, I haven't seen the music for that trumpet soli, but the song is certainly learnable. Just never played.
