They also have the best bands in the nation. I remember how floored I was back in 99 in the MDB when I saw Michigan at the Orange Bowl. We were lining up to do the Orange Bowl parade and we kinda had a mini battle of the bands. Our band played, it was solid as usual I was thinking "take that!" and then Michigan played hail to the victors with a band half the size of ours (in weight and size) and just blew us out of the water. The sound was crisp, in tune, and balanced. Then came halftime. Michigan's band members were in shape, no big fatties like we got in the MDB. In fact from what one Michigan person said, they have a physical requirement they all have to meet and while MDB members get paid to be in the band, Michigan members actually pay to be in their band. Michigan IMHO is the BEST band in the nation. While the cocky arrogant wankers at USC are a distant 2nd or 3rd.

While this post may seem a bash to the MDB, I still believe we have a top 5 band in the nation, just nothing as good as Michigan.

I am going to the MSU - JSU game this year...it may cause me to miss some or all of the Ole Miss/Alabama game but I will listen to all I can on the radio.

I really want to see the Southerners... based on projected returnees and newcomers, this is supposed to be the best band they have had in a really long time and that is saying something.

Years ago there was some sports magazine, I really can't recall which one it was, that did the same ranking. Their version had "Yea Alabama" in the top 3. They praised it for its uniqueness its distinctive sound, and a Dixieland jazz based format.

They also had a bottom five and Auburn's fight song was listed. I still recall they bashed it for having "more stop and starts" than the Red Mountain Expressway at 5:00.

Not to venture too far from the topic...

For MDB members past and current: is there a reason why the band never plays the Are You From Dixie & Alabama Jubilee stand tune? I've only ever heard it in recordings. Granted, I haven't seen the music for that trumpet soli, but the song is certainly learnable. Just never played.

Let me guess....they don't play it because it says "Dixie"?

Not to compare too much, and I went to Alabama and had friends in the MDB and love them, but...

I'm from Florida and my sister was a section leader for the Marching Chiefs at Florida State. They at the time, were like 450+, and one of the most respected marching bands in the nation. They played over seas a few time and thus gained the name, that they like to use...:rolleye2: , "World Renowned" Marching Chiefs. Anyway, I saw a pretty freaking good band every Saturday when we had season tickets. Well my sister came up for a the MSU game in 2001 and when we had pregame, she was joining in in the cheers and at the end said, thats was fun. I asked her what she thought of the MDB, and she kind of hesitated and said that they were a little out of tune, and was naming the sections that were out of tune...nerd. And she said that the lines were a little off. And then she found it funny when they all just randomly ran off the field when they were done. The MC march off and then double time in order. also she was surprised at the size, I reminded her we were a 19k school, not 29k. Also at FSU, they bump you out of the band after 4 years because there are so many people waiting in line to get in. And like above mentioned Michigan, you don't get payed at FSU. She found that amusing that Bama does. But she liked the show, pre and halftime and said she loved the fan interaction in pregame with the Bama spell out. She said at FSU, besides the war chant, pregame doesn't get such a crowd organized response like Alabama.

RTR:wink:

Well... she's right. Although in our defense, I've never heard a piccolo section in tune. ;)

Our drumline, however, is amazing. I really wish that they had a chance to show off more, because they definitely put in the most practice of any section, and we have some serious talent on that front. I personally know at least one member who was paid a huge sum to stay in CA this summer and instruct the drumline of the Vanguard (a DCI band).

Probably not very popular on this board, but the Aggie War Hymn is pretty cool. 80,000+ fans swaying in unison to that song at Kyle Field is quite a site to behold.

Has anyone else noticed that Auburn, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Florida, LSU, and Miss. State all have the same fight song???

They are all slightly different. But it looks like they all used one as a template and changed the chords ever so slightly.

Just listen...

I have noticed that the barn and florida's fight songs do sounds eerily alike.

While I do think "Hail to the Victors" is a great fight song after having been to the Orange Bowl game in 2000 I can tell you that Michigan has two cheers and two cheers only "Hail to the Victors" which isn't even really a cheer its a song and "Go Blue" thats it, it got really old hearing those two after a while.

A fight song has to have something that makes it memorable for everyone for it to be great. It has to have a hook...ask Vanilla Ice about that one.

Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, OU, and Naval Academy all have that.

If Rocky Top isn't their fight song, then it doesn't belong.

They have a defensive cheer called "temptation" that is dark and powerful that is unique to them and is pretty bad arsed IMHO.
