since it is obvious that cmg is coming back next year.... i think that there should be stipulations. mal should get mark into his office and start throwing out ultimatums.

1. cmg has to get an assistant that knows x's and o's
2. mal should demand a hard core defense

what other ultimatums should mal throw at cmg???

1) Better defense
2) New offensive philosophy (ban the high-low)
3) Consistency (other than losing) during road games
4) Improved Free-Throw shooting
5) Better shot selection
6) improvement from the team from the 1st to the last game
7) less turnovers
8) better clock management (see #5)
9) a set line-up
10) positive, effective in-game adjustments

With the players returning many of these goals should be perfectly attainable. A conference record that is well-above .500 and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Personally, I don't feel the NIT will cut it next year even though it's basketball.

I'd modify that in that I saw us set up in the HP offense only a couple of times against Vandy. Also, on set lineup, I'd add better bench utilization.

By set line-up I would include a set rotation meaning players know they're role from game to game (barring injury of course). Example- A sixth man on an NBA team knows he's the sixth man every game. I am no fan of a 7 man rotation or players (Steele) avg. more than 40 minutes a game.

Also, I didn't get to see the Vandy game, but I know I watched RH catching the ball above the foul line on WAAAAAYYYY to many sets (hi-lo) during the year. I just like big guys on the block (personal preference).

not to nit pick, but isn't that list just a means to an end? Won't his "list" really be something like:

1. improve on the road
2. improve at home
3. make the Dance
4. some sort of recruiting benchmark
5. above all, get butts back in the seats (and not visiting butts or disgruntled butts)

We need someone to teach our big guys how to get themselves open on the blocks and demand the ball. Even Richard gets a little lackadaisical on this sometimes. Of course, it can get very frustrating very quickly to actually get yourself open and then have a pipsqueak guard not get you the ball, or even worse, jack up a 25-footer.

You can't mandate that 6 players will play (or 5 or 7 or 8, etc.). If Moore is going to "mandate" such things, he might as well fire Gottfried and coach the team himself. Also, to say "ban the High Post offense" is not an acceptable answer, either. There's nothing wrong with the High Post offense if it is executed correctly -- we're not seeing the real High Post offense, period. But again, if you're going to mandate an offensive style, you may as well fire the coach and do it yourself.

What Moore can mandate to Gottfried are things like
1. Players will give full, consistent effort, or they won't see the court,
2. The offensive end of the floor will be characterized by obvious, crisp execution and by plays/sets that get players open looks at the basket by utilizing the court, the other offensive players (and their strengths), and the defensive players (and their weaknesses),
3. The defensive end of the floor will be characterized by intensity, regardless of philosophy (zone or man, full-court pressure or half-court pressure),
4. Proper rebounding will be obvious on both ends of the floor,
5. A plan will be in place to recruit players that will minimize holes in talent and ability, and
6. Discipline won't be an issue.

It seemed to me that Tom Kelsey did a good job with this when he was an assistant.

1. At least 10 wins in conference play (this means winning on the road).
2. Making at least the SEC tournament semifinals
3. Making at least Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament

These should be our goals each year, whoever the coach is.

Are you referring to Tom Asbury? He did a good job coaching the post players, and I can see a difference since he left.
No. Tom Kelsey was an assistant from '98 - '01. He came w/ CMG from Murray. He is the head coach at Belhaven.

Who's to judge on #1-Moore??? I thought the HC should already do that...especially after being at the program for a decade.
#2 Tongue-in-cheek on banning philosophies. I would like to see a new philosophy on offense. Sounds like you would like to see either an offense that actually fits our players skill sets, or getting players who can properly execute CMG's beloved offense...Also shouldn't the HC be doing that.
#3, #4 The HC will begin actually coaching fundamental skills that are inconsistently displayed at best.
#5 I reiterate 10 years at the Capstone to implement his program. Also, Why bother recruiting players if you don't plan to utilize a more thorough rotation to give them in-game experience
and #6 sums up a lot of the current problems in my opinion...
Discipline is an issue if you are having to "mandate" intensity. It may not be off-the-court, or in the classroom problem, but discipline applies to the court as well.

All of these are simply opinions I have. I agree with you on "mandate" not being the best word to describe the situation at hand for MM. I think if proper changes are made the results on the court will be profound enough for anyone to see if real, sustainable progress is being made.

If he allows Coach Gottfried to remain he can't demand anything.
No coach can be successful unless he's allowed to direct his own program, within his own philosophy.
All Moore can do is say "Mark we need to see some progress".
Then, Moore has to set him free to do his own thing and determine if the progress made meets his expectations as A.D. and go from there.
Demanding the hiring of defensive coaches etc. basically makes Mal the basketball coach.
At that point I'd be a huge CMG supporter. Because he doesn't have a chance and would be a huge underdog.
Hire them and let them coach Mal . If it doesn't work...fire them and find somebody better.
But the A.D. is the A.D.
Nowhere in those initials will you find the word "coach".
Just my opinion.

1. Lose the crimson blazer
2. Put a leash on your wife
3. Don't play your best player 41 minutes a game and cause him to have knee problems down the road

Hiring CGS's staff didn't make Hootie our football coach . Neither did firing Mal to bring back Homer . I thought it all worked out pretty well .

you are correct.... but he can bring cmg in his office and ask what his plans are for next year. if he doesn't like what he hears, he can fire his a**. and i'm sure that somewhere in talks like that, an a.d. gives an opinion or two. maybe not his own opinions, but opinions from basketball boosters.

the point is.... he (we, the team) can't allow this guy to come back unless he has a plan to get way more aggresive. alabama cannot stand for this to happen again next year (and just because steele is coming back doesn't mean it can't happen again).
