Slow Day what if question (Edit: if we hadn't hired Dubose)

Personally I am glad he has found a place he can enjoy coaching again and has apparently gotten his life back together. I feel sorry for all the young men who came to Alabama and quite frankly got short changed between the Dubose and Shula eras. They deserved better, but I suppose life is not always fair. I believe that the young men playing now and those who will don the Crimson jersey under CNS in the future are in for a great experience. We may never experience what we had during the Bryant era, but we will experience Alabama's return to greatness and its rightful place among the nation's elite.

No. He played Langham but didn't know about the agent. CGS asked Langham about it was told no. Coach probably should have done more checking..
That's not what I recall. What I remember is that Langham told CGS about the agent, but played it down (which may be where the "signing on a napkin" rumor got started). He didn't tell CGS that he had received money ($400 I believe). Instead of assuming Langham was ineligible and trying to work with the NCAA to make sure he could play, CGS handed the whole thing off to Bockrath and assumed it would be taken care of. The penalties where EXCESSIVE to say the least, but UA's compliance efforts were lackadaisical at best.

Coach probably should have done more checking..
Actually, when Coach heard that, second hand, from the NCAA, he said something to the effect that he wasn't going to be a private investigator. Many think that that single remark, which did get back to the Infractions Committee, was the final nail in our coffin, since they interpreted it as arrogance. IOW, it became an exercise in showing Alabama that it wasn't above the law. And there was some hangover from that incident to our most recent probation. Of course, we didn't stand a chance anyway with David Swank as the chair of the committee, since Hootie had rapped DS's knuckles when the tables had been turned when Hooties was at FSU...

I agree, that particular team, assuming we had hired a decent coach, would, IMO, still have beaten UF both times and would not have lost to La Tech in B'ham or to UT in Tuscaloosa. If we had hired, as has been mentioned Frank Beamer in 1997, we might still have had some left over problems from the Langham debacle, but none of the problems with Means and the recruiting violations incurred under Dubose. Had Bockrath not caved in to the facsimile campaign of hiring Dubose and gone with his first choice of Beamer IMO the last 10 years would have been what we had under CGS and probably at least one more MNC during that time.
Yep. Dubose was a less apt Les Miles with a little bit less talent. He got the SECC(which Miles has yet to do), but he had NC talent.

i've always heard that Ray Perkins was Coach Bryant's choice to replace him...which surprises me...because i thought that Bebes would have been the logical choice. in any event, CRP or CGS would have kept the team at a championship level of play. Throw Bobby Bowden into the mix and the dynasty becomes unbelievable. but things did not work out that way. we now have a world class coach...and we should see a return to normalcy.

Coach purposely distanced himself from the search. He said that he didn't want to be the one who determined the next HC. It might have been because he suspected anyone would have a hard time filling his shoes...

Personally, I have wondered all these years: whatever happened to the agent who slipped Langham the $400 and a napkin. Langham might be excused on the grounds of inexperience, but the agent certainly knew it was wrong. Did he get his agent-bribery license revoked? Was he forever barred from contact with our players? Did Bama send out a hit team to take care oif him? He seems to have slipped through the cracks and got a free pass.:rolleye2:
