First off, let me say I know up front that this will not be a popular question, but before you start bashing away, just think about it for a minute. How would you feel if Mal offered the job to Croom? Sly Croom is a Bama guy. He played and coached under Bear Bryant. We all know he loves the University of Alabama. He will likely not leave unless it is involuntary. Although he has not been very successful thus far at MSU, he took over a program that was really down and his teams have improved as the season has progressed. He has had little talent to work with at State.

One reason I think it would be a good hire is because I believe Mal and the Alabama administration need to show that they are not as arrogant and closed minded as what they have been perceived to be in the media. Offering Croom the job may make Mal feel uncomfortable since he passed Croom over 4 years ago, but to do so would also show that he is man enough to admit he was wrong. Also, I think it may get the national media off our backs somewhat for things that have happened over the past 10 years and actually shed some positive light on the Alabama program for a change. In addition, I think Croom is a good head coach just caught in a bad situation at MSU. I truly believe he could be very successful with the athletes that he could recruit to Bama.

Not as crazy as some other suggestions, but I think there is some real bad blood between Mal and Sly. Plus I am not sure how good a coach he is, even with the inferior talent there is still no way they should have lost to Maine.

I think CSC is a quality coach, but unfortunately I think he suffers from the same thing that CMS did. He for some reason either can't get a quality staff or just doesn't recognize a quality asst. when he sees them. I don't know which one, but that is a fault and a major one that would spell doom at Bama.

Hold on, need to get gasoline, gunpowder, tires and some firewood.... maybe even a little Kingsford edge. How large does flame need to be if you want it seen in space?

He's a tremendous man who believes in doing things the right way. You won't find many coaches with a better sense of class and integrity. He doesn't put up with any crap. But I don't think he's a very good X's and O's coach, and he tends to be too stubborn. JMHO.

It is a fair question. IMO there are a lot of burned bridges between Tuscaloosa and Starkville. For the sake of discussion, if he were to be considered, he would have to be told up front that no assistant coaches on his staff at MSU with prior service at Alabama would be hired, period!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Croom, but I don't think he's a good coach. And, didn't he accuse us or someone in the administation of being racist? I might be wrong about that. It seems I remember Jesse Jackson or somebody like him accusing us on Sly's behalf. I think it would be a mistake. Kinda like hiring somebody that dissed Bear Bryant by refusing to shake hands with him after a game. Oh, wait...we already did that.

"Sly Croom is a Bama guy. He played and coached under Bear Bryant. We all know he loves the University of Alabama."

Maybe one day we will get over ourselves and look for the best person for the job and stop trying to cram everyone in the long vacant shoes of the Bear. I don't care what school our next coach went to. So far former Bama players have made a negative to little impact on the program as coaches.

I hope we go without a HC and wait for the one we want instead of taking 2d best. Saben is 2d best, btw.

"Although he has not been very successful thus far at MSU, he took over a program that was really down and his teams have improved as the season has progressed. He has had little talent to work with at State."

His only improvement has been to beat us. I am not sure that is even improvement so much as we just flat sucked this year.

"One reason I think it would be a good hire is because I believe Mal and the Alabama administration need to show that they are not as arrogant and closed minded as what they have been perceived to be in the media."

I personally could care less what the media says and thinks about us. If we hired anyone based on your reason above, we would be wrong. Hire the best person for the job and not the person the media thinks is best.

Jesse Jackson did, but that had nothing to do with CSC. He has nothing but love for the University and I heard an interview with him after they beat us this year, and the thing he talked about more than anything was how great our facilities were and great it was for him to see all his former teammates there. He talked more about Bama than he did MSU winning the game.

:conf2: Plus if he got hired here, he could never put JJ at QB or he would be calling himself a liar to his own face... wait is that right. :conf2: :rolleye2: :biggrin2:

Ya think that Sly would interested? Maybe he might listen politely if Mal crawled on his knees. Then again, maybe not. Those sour grapes are probably tasting mighty sweet right about now.

While I personally believe it would be a bad idea; it would never happen anyway because it would mean that either Mal, Dr. Witt or both made a mistake 4 years ago and that doesn't fit the current Tuscaloosa spin. Currently they are still in the mode of "Mike delivered us from doom and gloom, but just didn't have the ability to take us back to the top."

Croom is a horrible coach. There are so many problems at that program right now it's not even funny. He's still trying to use the Jacky Sherrell left me with all these players excuse. Hiring him would be a flat out mistake. I don't care what color he is.

Its a real good question. Since so many thought he should have got the offer instead of CMS, its never too late. He is the same person he was 4 years ago, just with 4 more years college coaching under his belt. Of course, CMS is the same person he was 7 months ago, when he was given a raise & contract extension, just with 1 more year college coaching under his belt.

Croom's legacy will be that he got Shula both hired and fired at Bama.
I think Croom will be the "Old Maid" in the SEC before things are said and done. Don't forget he was one of the reasons Zook was fired from Florida.

Can you believe that a team who was shutout by several teams this year actually beat us...in our house!?!?!?

I need a drink.

It's amazing that I can tell who writes the post just by the content.
