My five year old has been taking Karate (isshinryu) for a year. We mainly did it for self confidence. After my wife's wreck (which the kids were in) it seemed his self confidence and esteem took a major hit. We were told that Karate is a great confidence booster. So we enrolled. After a year we've found he's really good at it and his instructor says he has the right temperate for it as well. He's not aggressive but has the ability to use it.
Yesterday we had some of our old neighbors come by for a visit. They have a son who is four. He is a bully, plain and simple. We told our son before they ever came over to come tell us if he starts "hitting" and we'd stop it immediately. We didn't want the first attempt at stopping it with our son putting a foot in his chest. So we instructed him if he starts doing it to immediately let us know.
For the most part the kid did very well for most of the time. But toward the latter part of their stay he started the bullying mess. But this time it was in front of the adults. The kids were playing where we were. The kid runs up behind jumps on my son's back with this forearms around his throat choking him. Immediately he goes to his knees (on purpose) and to begin with is simply trying to get the kid off of him. I'm waiting on his parents to step in. They didn't so I simply said "Show him what you learned in karate." About that time the kid gets flipped over, lands pretty hard on his back, with my son rolling on top of him in his guard and putting a forearm across his throat. The other parent decided to step in then and tell his son "You shouldn't of done it to him. You see what happens when you 'hit'?". LOL! Sorry for the braggadocios post but as a father and wanting my son to be able to "handle himself" this couldn't have made me more proud.
