NativeTider,

Didn't get to complete what I was saying to you yesterday so I published somethings on my blog for you because it looks like Brett has disabled the blogs here at Tidefans. So I'll just publish my link.

Thoughts on my Philosophy:

1. I don't "marry" myself to any offense or defense. To me the "best offense" is the one that scores points and the "best defense" is the one that keeps the other team from scoring. I use the 1-3-1 out here because it isn't something that a lot of people use. I only use it disrupt or if we are have post problems. Otherwise, it is mainly 3 quarters of "M2M" in your face defense (with a mixture of Duke's M2M team defense) with a mixture of Full Court Presses and 1 Qtr. of 1-3-1 Zone Defense.

2. I think teaching M2M first is the most crucial part of any defensive teaching that a youngster can get win or lose!

3. I'm a "space" freak! I like to use as much as I can of offense and limit the amount of space for the other team on defense!

Here is my link to my blog that I set up a couple of months ago. Haven't had time to write much recently, but did last evening.

The slides are pretty basic for movement.

Thanks Lane! I appreciate your help. I agree about defensive fundamentals. We teach them to play with there feet and if the player they are guarding picks up their dribble then get your hands up and harass.

We are 2-0 so far. I will keep you updated as the season goes along.

LD... thanks for the post. I love talking x's and o's when it comes to basketball so it's good to get some of that discussion going.

I'm a big proponent of the 1-3-1 as well, but I tend to see too many teams shrink the 1-3-1 inside the 3 point line which eliminates a lot of the pros that you talked about. Also, it's just so dependent on having a quick, athletic, and skilled defender to play the baseline. If you have that position filled well, it's a great defense.

I completely agree about not marrying yourself to any one offense or defense. I'm a big fan in any sport of "having a left hand." When something's not working, you've got to have something else you're good at. As far as defenses go, we ran M2M, 2-3, 3-2, 1-3-1, full court 2-2-1, full court 1-3-1, and a half court 2-2-1. We'd usually run about 4 of these in any given game just to keep the opposing team on their toes and to see which gave us the best advantage.

I'm also a big fan of disguising defenses. I hate seeing a team getting back on defense and running to a spot when they are running a zone. Don't give the opposing coach or PG an opportunity to see the defense and adjust. It's kind of like Saban's defenses and blitz packages where they may show 2+ looks before the snap so the QB doesn't know what's coming.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents for now...

That's why I like the "Extended 1-3-1" where you meet the ball about mid-court and push the wings outside the 3 pt. line. Once that happens the chance of shrinking goes away. Basically, your baseline defender is your team leader and QB.

Please expound more on that. We've always trapped out of the 1-3-1, and I've always used a big man (4 or 5) down there as a "safety" who can stop any open layups and rebound long shots.

1. Usually, you attack a zone with a "high post" so you don't want the ball to make it to the HP.

2. I want some one on the baseline to direct the flow of the defense. Tell the wings when to retreat and stop the ball. Also to watch the HP and the movement of our center? I want the center to hover around the top of the key.

3. Don't like trapping the wings because it allows to much space to get the ball out there.

4. Usually, long shots end up with long rebounds.

5 I always have my best ball handler and passer down the to get the pass out of there to my point which is usually my best finisher.

Another point is that if the low defender moves to the corners to trap, the center drops down and defends the block and gathers the rebounds.

Good stuff here!

If you could tajke any former or current Bama player as the baseline 1, who would it be?

Horry and Askins came to my mind quickly
