i keep hearing about the talent gap. although i don't think shula left the team stocked with great players, weren't his last two classes in the top 25 or thereabouts? also, didn't his staff find hidden guys like gilberry and arenas?
and as for the talent gap argument regarding this game, according to rivals, ulm had the #108 recruiting class last year.
again, shula was clearly nothing compared to saban in recruiting, but i think he certainly left more than enough talent to overcome the mighty warhawks.
although the defense was far from great, it gave the offense two short field opportunities to tie the game (one from the 27). and the offense completely failed to capitalize.
to be quite honest, tonight we looked pretty much exactly like we did last year.
some have suggested that saban doesn't care too much about the record this season and that he just wants to lay a foundation and separate the wheat from the chaffe. that may well be the case, and i have little doubt that he inherited a very disfunctional team. that being said, however, today was a total flop.
