Who would buy the suits for the football players? Your speaking of $250 - $500 per suit.. I know as a college student, it's tough to go out and buy a suit when your on a tight budget...especially, when your not on scholarship.

I understand the tradition that your talking about with Bear Bryant making his guys wear suits...but as others had said, we are in a whole different corporate dress code now...
Does anybody actually look at these threads? I posted a photo of the players arriving for the USC game clearly wearing suits/sport coats and ties, yet people are still trying to give reasons why they don't. Every player that has been on the Mike Shula show this season has shown up in an Alabama polo. Somehow this has made many decide that they never wear suits.

The original post never states that Bama players dressed in blue jeans to games. It states that the USM players did. It goes on to say that Bama players dress that way on the Shula show, which they've done all season.
But he implied it with this...

Now listen folks im not trying to start a holy war here but, I remember Coach Bryant having his players dressed in coats and ties and dress slacks and at every game they would make a leisurely walk around the field before it started....Joe Paterno at Penn State dress's his young men in this manner and so does ND.
He talks about how Coach Bryant had them dress for games, implying that the current players don't. He also talks about how the Southern Miss players were dressed coming to the game and seemed to assume that Bama did the same without checking first. What is he talking about with Penn State and ND if not how they dress for the games? I'm sure they don't have the players in suits 24/7.

Duhhhhh......Why don't Alabama's players wear suits???

:) :) I know they wear suits getting off the bus and all, but I saw Brodie at the Taco Bell on Tuesday night and he didn't have his suit on. I guess he didn't want to get that burrito on his tie.........

Dress Code

Someone said they saw the team wearing suits when they got off the bus in South Carolina--another said does it matter what they wear----YES it matters what they wear! Yes it matters that they have a haircut and they speak to their coaches in a respectful manner--YES it matters.....To say times have changed is a cop out!!! Good manners never and I did say NEVER go out of style and neither does respect for yourself in how you act, dress and behave in public. Lawyers may not wear ties anymore and ladies may not wear suits to the games anymore, but these players represent a tradition and a university where it should matter. I don't care if they let their hair down like young people do, but when you step off a bus as a University of Alabama football player you should bring that swagger and that attitude dressed in a package that says I'm special--Im an Alabama football player---envy me!!!!!

This is a perfect example of what I was talking about in that other thread GrandBay...people pointing back to Coach Bryant, it doesn't matter that there shouldn't be an argument, but there is one b/c CMS isn't meeting someones CPB's standards...I agree that this thread is WAY too long (I know I'm making it longer) considering they still wear suits...

"I tell u something that bothers me. I went to the Alabama vs So Miss game. As i watched the So Miss players walk off the bus i saw them dressed in tshirts and shorts and sweatpants for crying out loud and wearing amfm radios and mp3s players. I watched the Mike Shula Show yesterday i think it was and i saw Brodie and Demeco Ryans dressed in tshirts blue jeans and tennis shoes.

Now listen folks im not trying to start a holy war here but, I remember Coach Bryant having his players dressed in coats and ties and dress slacks and at every game they would make a leisurely walk around the field before it started. Then Coach Bryant would always come out last and lean up against the goalpost and smoke a Chesterfield. Then when he got over in front of the student section he'd tip his hat to the students and it was just like seeing God. Then the roof came off the place. Im not trying to get off the subject here what im talking about is the way we are dressed and how we present ourselves in the public eye.

These young men that represent UA football every saturday not only represent The University of Alabama but they represent their parents and the community from which they live and the state of Alabama on and off the field.

The University of Alabama is the premier football program of the south i just think its high time we started dressing our young men in a more professional manner. Joe Paterno at Penn State dress's his young men in this manner and so does ND. Im not comparing ourselves to anyone im just giving two examples.

Im old school folks i cant help it. Flame me if you wish. This has been on my mind along time glad to get it off my chest."

Good grief. Bama fans will always find something to complain about. Next thing you will be complaining about will be why Bama is not blowing top 5 teams out by 35 or 40 points instead of 28. Give me a break. Enjoy the win.

A friend of mine worked for the team while he was at school (grad last year) and he tells me that when they travel for away games they have to wear suits and ties. That includes on the team plane. I'm not sure if they always have to wear them on the plane (they may be able to travel some times in team issued warm-ups, I don't know) but I know they definitely do suits for away games. I hope this clears up a little bit.

My mom made me wear a suit and tie to church, I thought then that suits were invented by people who did NOT live in the South, its entirely too hot, I'm 39 and my thoughts haven't changed. I no longer own a suit or tie. fortunately I'm a programmer so nobody cares what I look like.

I understand the post, but simply don't think its applicable to today, I would rather the players feel comfortable and at home at Alabama.

Have we really come to care what the team wears while traveling? Don't we have bigger things to worry about?

I hardly call wearing a tie a tradition. And not wearing one does not equate to being classless.

Tradition

You're right wearing a tie is not a tradition and really small on the scale of the big picture, but that isn't what I or the other folks were trying to say. It's about image to the outside world I guess. We've taken such a hit on our image in the press and the sports world that its nice to see our team look like more than a rag tag group of ball players. What we do off the field is as important as what we do on the field. If that is harking back to Bear's days so be it. I am not going to write on this anymore as I think we have beat it to death, but if you don't believe giving these young men a sense of self is going to carry over into their careers and family lives for years to come then you don't have a clue what Alabama football is about. We won quite a few national championships and men like LeRoy Jordan who wore those ties don't seem to have been hurt by it.
