Nail embedded in man's skull for 6 days

LITTLETON, Colorado (AP) -- A dentist found the source of the toothache Patrick Lawler was complaining about on the roof of his mouth -- a four-inch (10-centimeter) nail the construction worker had unknowingly embedded in his skull six days earlier.

Toothache ...

Despite his lack of medical insurance and hospital bills between $80,000 and $100,000, Katerina Lawler said her husband is in good spirits. "The doctors said, 'If you're going to have a nail in the brain, that's the way you want it to be,"' she said. "He's the luckiest guy, ever."

No, I'm pretty sure that the luckiest guy ever never had a nail embedded in his brain... :eek2:

That must have been some pretty potent pain pills he was on not to realize that a nail had gone through his mouth & lodged itself in his skull.

My lord... :eek2:

"This is the second one we've seen in this hospital where the person was injured by the nail gun and didn't actually realize the nail had been imbedded in their skull," neurosurgeon Sean Markey told KUSA-TV in Denver. "But it's a pretty rare injury."

It might be rare, but I'm sticking to the hammer from now on. :eek2:

You can imagine how I just felt after having to go out and put a few nails in a dresser for the wife after posting this article. :eek2:

And this happened because the nailgun misfired?

What was the brand of nailgun? Because I sure don't want to use one of those, ever. :eek2:

I'd feel a lot better about this if it had involved a case of Bud and the phrase, "Betcha can't do THIS!"

$80,000 seems expensive for an office visit to the dentist, especially if the dentist was his friend. I bet my local dentist could have removed it with only laughing gas, a pair of pliers, and some cotton gauze to stop the bleeding.

i bet that's almost exactly what they did. plus a dozen or so mris

The tool sent a nail into a piece of wood nearby, but Lawler didn't realize a second nail had shot through his mouth, said his sister, Lisa Metcalse.

Ummmm....how do you NOT notice a thing like that? Surely there was some blood, a kick in the head from the impact of the nail....something!!
