He originally committed to Auburn because it felt like "fambly". If I remember correctly his entire family expected him to commit to Alabama at this announcement.
IIRC Spencer was being recruited by Bama but didn't have a "commitable" offer at the time. He was told by the staff that he may not have a spot in the class and not to commit. His commit to the Barn was more about spite at that point.

I think his recruiter at Auburn was Trooper and wanted to play this up a being an "Alabama flip".

Yep, not even sure his offer to AU was commit-able at the time. but he was a top 10 guy in the state i think an part of how petty and messy the rivalry got during those few years.

As I recall, he wanted to commit and take his trips. The coaches said they would only take his commitment if he didn't visit other schools. Minutes before his announcement, he had a telephone conversation with CNS and the Alabama staff that didn't go well. So Spencer switched on the spot to Auburn. Tried to get back in to no avail.

Top 10? Maybe in the Cullman Times rankings. I always got the impression that he was very naive in how the recruiting process worked and probably received some very bad advice which cost him any shot he had at a scholly offer to UA.

He is a reserve offensive lineman. I would like to see him get a few snaps against our defensive line. Attached is his biography page on their football site.

I was hoping not to hear that name again, he has the face only a mother could love. I recall he was news for about a week, playing Bama against the Barn till CNS said AMF ( adios my friend). You could have waited to after the game to mention him.

If I remember correctly the room, especially his family was absolutely stunned silent when he picked the au Tigers. i believe his family has that "Crimson tide" room. I think after a while he thought it through and if he couldn't be at Alabama he was going to leave the state.

This is the norm today. I try to teach my grandchildren that our choices have consequences. Of course, I am alone and everyone else lets them have their way. At McDonalds when they want a hamburger and then as soon as I order they decide they really wanted McNuggets I tell them it is too late. They already made their choice. Grandma, of course, stops the kitchen and has everything changed for the FOUR and FIVE year old ..... and I am a mean old man. And then when the kids meal arrives and they get the girl and boy toy (which they decided on themselves) one them puckers up and wants what the other one has and grandma will go stop the ordering and building orders to have them dig around trying to find what the little darling have finally decided they want. This occurs all the time, not isolated and spills over into everything else. After we buy them a toy and get halfway home grandma turns around and goes and exchanges or buys the one they REALLY wanted.

This guy sounds like he was raised that our choices can be changes at will.

Those kids will have some real entitlement attitudes, which can lead to even worse disciplinary problems in the next 10 years or so.

I seem to recall that he said he was committing to the "the University of Auburn."

Head case
That is a bit harsh IMHO. I suspect he was getting bad advice and wasn't very knowledgeable of how the recruiting game works. As someone mentioned above, life is all about decisions and consequences. I suspect (hope?) Spencer learned a valuable life lesson from that experience. In the end it worked out for him, he got a full scholarship to a program on the rise that is now playing for the national championship.

We have taken guys who flipped so I'm not mad at him. Choosing a college is a big decision and it does not bother me if a kid wants to milk it.
