The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is getting down to brass tactics.

Sheriff’s officials are spending $300,000 on items they say would make deputies look more professional in their jobs and could help make them safer.

But the taxpayer dollars won’t go toward tools such as higher-quality ballistic vests, backup guns or body cameras, all of which are optional items that deputies have to pay for on their own.

Instead, Sheriff Jim McDonnell is spending the money on a minor cosmetic makeover of deputies’ uniforms: changing the color of their belt buckles and other metal pieces of gear from silver to gold. That way, the metallic bits — all made of brass — will match the gold-hued tie clips, lapel pins and six-pointed star badges that deputies already wear, McDonnell said.

Florida is receiving $13 billion in federal stimulus money to build roads, feed seniors and save jobs.
But $3.4 million of Florida’s cut is going to build a tunnel to help turtles cross a busy highway, and this turtle tunnel has some taxpayers outraged, according to the Capitol News Service.
The turtle tunnel made a list of 100 questionable spending projects released by Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn. The list was submitted to the president's office, which responded by calling the report “flawed.”
U.S. Highway 27 near Tallahassee is said to be the deadliest road in the world for turtles. The highway divides two lakes, and the turtles use one for nesting.

This was in 2009....but I thought a great example, and great use of stimulus money.

Why fix an old bridge humans drive over everyday -- when you can build a turtle tunnel

It's a safety issue I kid you not. The other day I was driving near Arab and a turtle popped out on the side of the road. I swerved of course because I didn't want to become a turtle killer but clipped it enough to shoot that sucker about 15 feet spinning like a flying saucer. Now if that turtle could fly that fast imagine if motorist hit a bunch of 'em, you have spinning flying turtles everywhere. One is bound to hit a pedestrian or maybe a car windshield. that would cause a lot of damage. Imagine if you will, you're eating a bag a chips in the back seat and old Elmo comes flying through the window.
