Game Thread: Sugar Bowl (ND vs UGA) (ESPN | Jan 2 at 3pm CST)

SEC teams have taken players from all over the country, too. It is what it is.
We've gotten several from California (and Hawaii!) over the Nick Saban era.

But the core has always been from Texas back through the south to the east coast. And the majority of the NFL talent that's flowed through the SEC over these last 20 years or so has come from that same geographic footprint.

This is something SEC schools are going to have to reckon with. Ohio State and to a lesser extent Penn State have a very nice pool of high school talent to draw upon. Michigan as well due to the talent base in the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania. But if these Big Ten schools can now cherry pick (buy) talent already on SEC rosters...

One year does not make a trend. But we will see how this continues to develop. My one prediction is that, absent massive reform, it does not benefit the SEC at all.

It is ironic how some of these other fan bases are chirping on about how the South was always cheating. And it actuality, there is rampant cheating going on right now with tampering and the fact that NIL was never supposed to be pay for play.

There is something really sinister going on that I fear we've only scratched the surface of.

UGA tampered with Maurice Smith, and I dont doubt there was tampering with Downs as well as Bond

You may be right. One thing that is probably happening is that the high rolling programs (Texas oil schools, OSU, Michigan, etc al.) are having a blast and don’t care that “things are in turmoil” and may be satisfied if they are never resolved, especially with a hard cap.

Another thing that might be going on is the high rollers especially Texas, may be restraining themselves until some sort of 10 year agreement is reached. The agreement depending somewhat on the voluntary restraint shown by the high rollers. Then once that is in place they go on a spree for a decade.

They would likely have the complicity of the media, so while there might be grumbling by the hated South, they will get by mostly unscathed. And that is important to them - to appear not to care inordinately or to employ the “slimey tactics” of the Southern rubes, especially the use of “filthy lucre”. As the B10 Commish or OSU AD said when Texas and OU were first reported coming to the SEC in a moment of desperate candor, “We’re not gonna let the Southeast run collegiate athletics are we?”

They’ve bounced back pretty well by destroying the then world of college football, at least were passive in the face of other forces at work. Maybe coincidence, maybe not.

Hows that for a little weekend conspiracy fodder 😊?
