I think different people have different ideas about what it is to be a fan of a team and what it is to be against a team. For me, it mainly has to do with whether I WANT the team to win or lose. Being a bama fan means I want bama to win; being against auburn means I want them to lose. It doesn't have much to do with how good I think the team is, how good I think a particular player is, or how morally virtuous their players or coaches are. For what it's worth, I do believe we've got a good team and that we'll beat auburn. But I don't think this belief is what makes me a fan.
For a lot of people, it seems like part of being a fan of a team has to do with what you BELIEVE. If you're a fan of a team, you believe that the team is good, will be good, or would be good if it wasn't for bad luck, evil outside forces, or a temporary lapse. If you're against a team, you will resist believing good things about them. If they appear to be good, you suspend judgment until they have played better teams. If they appear to be very good or great, you begrudgingly admit that they are good but point out some flimsy reason for skepticism. Imagine if someone had said last year that "Ingram looks good sometimes but not other times, so the jury's still out." We tend to raise the standards of evidence. We'll say "They haven't played anyone" even when they've played and beaten a team that beat our team soundly.
These two kinds of fans can get into some weird conflicts where it feels like you're speaking different languages. Some of us feel a little embarrassed when a bama fan refuses to acknowledge (without excuse or qualification) a weakness of our team or a strength of the opponent. Others suspect betrayal if we acknowledge these such things too quickly. This would make more sense to me if I thought fans were literally part of the team or that our conversations with each other and our arguments with barners were part of the game or affected it in some significant way. But I don't think that. If I say that Cam Newton is really fricking good or that our defense has been disappointing, this isn't like a tide player getting up slow after a play or otherwise showing a lack of intensity. It's not going to send a message to auburn that our team is scared of Cam. It will just let other people in the conversation know that my being a bama fan has not rendered me blind to some obvious truths.
sorry so wordy
