Tebow & Cam Newton

Maybe you guys should go ahead and convert. I'm sure there's still room on the Gus bus.

Cam is a great athlete, and has looked unstoppable at times. He has also looked inept at times as well. He has threw numerous bad interceptions and lost huge chunks of yardage trying to make something happen when under pressure. He looked unstoppable this last, but good grief, I don't think I've ever seen a more pathetic effort than the Hogs displayed Saturday. Some of you guys act like we shouldn't even show up in the Iron Bowl.

Dont get me wrong, I think we can neutralize him in the iron bowl. Cam just makes the game interesting this year and poses a real threat to our defense. I, like others, am not ready to crown him. Lets see what he does against a D that forces him to make difficult throws. Gotta give him his due to this point, though.

but what decent defense have they played MSU please!!! the guy gets all games at home that helps him alot so until he wins consistently on the road then he is not legit
I can think of one big game they have to play on the road this year...

Notice I said "they" not "him" cause it's a team game - football is just that. Cameron Newton is a great player and I have never taken a shot at him for his past.

Nonetheless, I sense some fear in those that are so eager to prop him up as they have - let's not forget what weapons we have and the track record we possess.

I think different people have different ideas about what it is to be a fan of a team and what it is to be against a team. For me, it mainly has to do with whether I WANT the team to win or lose. Being a bama fan means I want bama to win; being against auburn means I want them to lose. It doesn't have much to do with how good I think the team is, how good I think a particular player is, or how morally virtuous their players or coaches are. For what it's worth, I do believe we've got a good team and that we'll beat auburn. But I don't think this belief is what makes me a fan.

For a lot of people, it seems like part of being a fan of a team has to do with what you BELIEVE. If you're a fan of a team, you believe that the team is good, will be good, or would be good if it wasn't for bad luck, evil outside forces, or a temporary lapse. If you're against a team, you will resist believing good things about them. If they appear to be good, you suspend judgment until they have played better teams. If they appear to be very good or great, you begrudgingly admit that they are good but point out some flimsy reason for skepticism. Imagine if someone had said last year that "Ingram looks good sometimes but not other times, so the jury's still out." We tend to raise the standards of evidence. We'll say "They haven't played anyone" even when they've played and beaten a team that beat our team soundly.

These two kinds of fans can get into some weird conflicts where it feels like you're speaking different languages. Some of us feel a little embarrassed when a bama fan refuses to acknowledge (without excuse or qualification) a weakness of our team or a strength of the opponent. Others suspect betrayal if we acknowledge these such things too quickly. This would make more sense to me if I thought fans were literally part of the team or that our conversations with each other and our arguments with barners were part of the game or affected it in some significant way. But I don't think that. If I say that Cam Newton is really fricking good or that our defense has been disappointing, this isn't like a tide player getting up slow after a play or otherwise showing a lack of intensity. It's not going to send a message to auburn that our team is scared of Cam. It will just let other people in the conversation know that my being a bama fan has not rendered me blind to some obvious truths.

sorry so wordy

To me, the main difference in Tebow and Newton is that Tebow did it over a four year span, while Newton hasn't finished his first season. But, statistically, Newton's been almost as impressive as Tebow...
- #1 in the country in TDs per attempt
- #1 in the country in Yds per attempt
- #2 in the country in pass efficiency
- Tied for #1 in the country in rushing TDs
- #11 in the country in Rush YPG
- Through 7 games in 2007 (Heisman season), Tebow had 2,289 total yards and 27 TDs. Newton has 2,138 total yards and 25 TDs. The one difference is consistency. Tebow had at least one passing TD and one rushing TD in every game, while Newton has had 3 games without a rushing TD, and one game without a passing TD. But, Newton has an undefeated team, while Tebow did not.

But, if you will recall, Florida committed to using Tebow less in the running game after his Sophomore year due to injury concerns - he injured his shoulder and broke his hand that year. I wonder if Cam can make it through the season healthy - not a knock on him, just a general concern for QBs that run that much.

This weekend will tell us a bunch. Against a solid defense like Mississippi State, Cam did not look great with his two INTs. Against a good/great defense like LSU, he may look even worse.

He is a very skilled player and so far has shown to be a good runner, but LSU may give us the blue print to beat Auburn.

I agree.
Though, I think we largely already know how to stop him. It will just boil down to executing our plan. Containment, pressure, and hitting him hard...

:BigA: Not to knock anyone, but Saban will have the blue print that will stop Newton if the players can execute it! I think we will have to make a legal hit on him every time he touches the ball just as soon as it gets in his hands! He seems to have a delayed relay every time before he takes off running. Get to him before he has time to think and get out of that delayed relay mode! I am sure Saban will have a more sophistcated plan than this, but this is just my idea! If he takes the hits and heat I think we can bring he will be getting gunshy by halftime! We brought the heat to Tebow and he abandoned the run, and started making mistakes in last years game!
