As much as it pains me to do so, I have to give the arnge credit. This effectively removes the optionality of contributions to the pay-for-play collectives and makes them mandatory. Want tickets? You contribute.

I don't know the numbers, but I'd guess it'll drive participation in the collective far beyond what it would otherwise have been.

Smart move.

Only tangentially related, but this is another step toward institutionalizing the current craziness. The more structure (read salaries for administrators) you build around pay-for-play, the harder it will be to legislate uniformity across all schools.

Even the solution I've been advocating for some time now -- unionization -- requires both labor (players) and management (school administrations / presidents) to want a solution.

The more incentive that greater and greater numbers of people have in keeping the status quo, chaotic though it may be, the more likely there will be no adult supervision.

As usual money changes things, and lots of money distorts everything. We've been watching the top conferences, schools, coaches, administrations, etc. in college football get richer and richer for a long time, and now we are seeing the (money) dam finally break. It's like that scene in the first Ghost Busters.

You know that many other teams are going to start adding these fees. I've pretty much given up of ever going to a Bama game because of the prices. We used to go to NAU games here in Northern Arizona and prices for the game went from $25 to $80 for the cheap seats. I guess I'll just have to be happy watching on TV.

I can end all this craziness. Pay the players and the coaches this way. Pay them for each win. Lose? No pay. Ten percent of salary for each win, nothing for each loss. Pay for Play indeed. You think you are worth the money? Prove it.

Pro sports are becoming more inaccessible by the year and now "College" football is following the lead of their big brother. If it was not for this site, and the fine folks on this site, I would move on from football.

I think it is a smart move by UT and my guess is other schools (including us) will follow suit. It ensures "every fan participates" and each home game you're getting at least 80,000-90,000+ to contribute.

I don.t like it...but it is the era we now live and compete in. We all want the top players to come to Bama and the money has to come from somewhere.

I'm not sure about that, they're estimating making $7.6 million in additional revenue due to the "talent fee" so the upcharge would have to be more than $1/ticket.

No, that number didn't represent dollars, but fans attending per game. They're getting 80,000-90,000 people to contribute to the "fund" per game. So each home game they're making approximately $900,000 for the "talent fee" fund. Extrapolate that over 8 home games and you're looking at around $7.2 million for the year. I think my math is right, but it may not be. LOL!

There are coaches with $100+ million dollar buyouts. $8 million to the kids is not that much. But, when all you have is kids playing for money, the game will not be the same. The passion for winning will be slowly replaced by greed. I think you’ll see a lot more kids quit mid game/season if they aren’t getting what they think is the right amount of money for their talent. I just can’t wait for kids holding out of spring/fall practice for more money like the pros.

The average season ticket was $72 per game this year for Bama.
If Bama does the same as UT then that would be a $7.20 surcharge per ticket per game.
100,000 seats minus 15,000 student seats leaves 85,000 seats.
85,000 x $7.20 = $612,000 per game.
7 home games would be $4,284,000.
I would not be surprised if Bama does this.
Unfortunately this seems to be the cost of being competitive in the NIL world.

Supposedly Ohio State spent $20 Million this year on NIL.

Wouldn't surprise me to see this added to other sports like basketball. At least for teams that are hot right now.
