Sumlin will be very high on a lot of lists, will come down to who offers him the most money and what conference he wants to coach in.
Agreed. He appears to be a viable candidate but we'll just have to see what aTm decides. Smart move no matter what making the change without any more delay.

IMO aTm is making a good decision to try someone different for HC. When an oughta'-be top-10 team finishes 6-6, there's a coaching issue. May as well break in a new coach and a new conference in the same year... :pDT_umn:

Regardless of what does and does not seem like it would work in the SEC, Sumlin is a very good coach and will win eventually with them if he gets the gig. I was hoping someone out west would get him.

Names on short list said to be Kevin Sumlin, Kirby Smart & Charlie Strong
Other than UGA, this is the only job I'd like to see Smart really go after (if he does at all). This would be HUGE for him and he'd be a great fit I think. (for the record I want him HERE!)

Things are moving fast, would think Sumlin might have the inside track with HC experience and current ties to the state of Texas.
I agree. I really don't think Sumlin was going to leave until this popped up. This year has bought him a TON of years in Houston, but this is job #2 in Texas (to be #1 soon as UT is going downhill IMHO) and too much for him to pass up I think. He can probably name his price.

A&M is going to lose a lot of income because of our exit penalties and Sherms 8.8 million buyout. However, I don't think ASU can pay what we can. People in College Station and Aggies in Houston loved him in 01 and were highly upset that he was let go when Slocum was relieved of his duties.

8.8? JESUS! What in the WORLD was aTm thinking?

I agree, there is NO WAY ASU can go to war with aTm if they both want Sumlin.

One thing is certain, Sherm will be a rich man. Aggies going to have to reach deep in there pockets with this, exit fees, and a stadium renovation.

ATM is one of the few schools that can pay with anybody. Their endowment is unbelievable. For comparison, Bama's endowment in 2008 was $515M, ATMs endowment in 2006 was $5.6B!

They have money to burn.

Please then explain why they hired Mike Sherman and Dennis Franchoine.

Money ≠ automatic good coaching hires. But don't forget that at the time Fran was a hot commodity...
LT at TCU and then BAMA's ability to make any coach a 10 game winner made that rat excrement a wealthy man. He was such a hot commodity at that point he could name his price. Little did the aggies know he was ready to run and probably would have left for less money.

$Bill Byrne wanted Sherm to get an extension last year after we had one decent season, but he is going to retire next summer (if he doesn't quit or get fired first) and doesn't care since it's not his money.

No idea why we hired Sherman (outside of the fact that he was the OLine coach for part of Slocums tenure and is still good friends with him), most of us wanted to go after Spurrier instead. However, Spurrier wanted good golf and the SEC. Someone stated already, Fran was a hot commodity and let's face it...being an Aggie, I can admit that a lot of us like to watch how Alabama operates. A&M has only been a coed school since 1963 and are a very young alumni base, half of our living Former Students are class of 1991 or younger. Simply stated, A&M looks up to Alabama as to what we want to become as a football power. What better way than to try and emulate how the best do it? Regarding Fran, we figured, "If he is good enough for 'Bama, then he is good enough for A&M". That is my opinion at least.
