Rolando was one of the best LBs to ever play the college game. CJ is a great football player. He could play several positions at a high level.

CJ being inspired for a senior campaign gives Bama fans a greater body of work and certainly endears us to the talent, attitude and work ethic you always see in him. Had Ro hung around one more year it would have been a no brainer for me. Big, fast, disruptive and instinctive was McClain and a Butkus winner to boot. And he would have gotten better his senior year under Saban, cause that's what you do under Saban, get better. McClain, in a lot of ways was Mosley in a bigger body.

I'm going to have to go with CJ. He came in and as a true freshman, worked into meaningful playing time on a team STACKED with talent. Not to take anything away from Ro and Donta, but when they came to campus they didn't have nearly as much talent to compete against as we have now.

This was a really hard one, so good question.

I went with Hightower just because he was so smart & called the D plays. Had he not been hurt I don't think it would be close but CJ is really giving him a run.
I went with Hightower too for the same reason. CJ is such a great player and a great leader too. It's like asking me : Which marathon did you prefer to run ? Boston, NYC or Chicago ? Maybe Boston but they're all great ! So, Maybe Hightower but these 4 LB are all great !

Tough pick. I went with Don'ta, but CJ will probably have passed him (bamachile vision only - stats be hanged) when I look back at the end of the year.

p.s. - It's a measure of the toughness of this quiz that an NFL starter is ranking last among Alabama linebackers in the last 5 years.

I went with CJ. To me he is the perfect player. He plays with extreme effort and toughness. At the same time he has incredible talent. And to top it all off he clearly does lots of work in the film room. The result is a dominant LB.

The two play series against Arkansas where CJ got beat on one play and then caused an INT on the next shows that CJ has bought into what Coach is selling about playing each play like it has a life and history of it's own.

Seriously if CJ's hands didn't turn into stones at time his interception numbers would be jaw dropping. He dropped like 3 or 4 in 2010 that I can remember. He's already tied for most INT's returned for TD's. The guy is just amazing.

He is even more important for us now that so many teams run the spread. To me he is the perfect build for what a anti spread LB should be.

I gotta vote Ro, he started from day one...he called the defenses...and he was a monster between the SIDELINES.
FIFY.

I think the passage of a few short years may have fogged a few memories around here, not to mention that CJ wins the on/off field character battle hands-down when compared to Ro. That being said, Rolando's on field play ranks among the top 5 in the HISTORY of Bama football, not just the last 5 years. CJ probably played his most physical game in Crimson vs LSU this past Saturday. Ro brought that every week, every season. Ro's raw speed was deceptive because of his natural, fluid running motion. He wasn't just a gap-plugger in the middle, he could play from one sideline to the other and was agile enough to be a good coverage LBer. He was a force vs Florida in the SECCG.

I've been saying CJ for 3 years and could not understand for the life of me why he didn't play more last season. Too many people get hung up on size, even our staff sometimes.
This. CJ has been our best LB ever since he got to campus. The dude has the best instincts that I have ever seen from any of our LB's even going back to the days of Biscuit and DT (RIP). If I were to compare him to anyone he sort of reminds of Demeco Ryans. I still think DT, Biscuit, and DR (in that order) are the 3 best LB's at UA over the past 30 years but CJ is probably #4.

If CJ didn't have stone hands this year he would far and away be our best pass-defending LB ever. He's probably already the best we've ever had, but he's dropped at least one pick-6 this year and probably more than that.

He's probably the best all-around LB Saban has ever had in this system. Ro was the best "field general" we've had...probably ever considering how complex CNS's defensive scheme is.

Hard to pick between these guys as they are different and bring different qualities to the table. CJ showed a lot this past weekend against LSU though...that he has what it takes to dominate his opponent to the point of making them give up and lay down.

Nico was a better run stuffer, so they said. Nico is a good friend of mine but he's not. Not after what I saw and have been seeing this year. CJ is everywhere. Got his hands on three balls as well and two should have been picked. Magee may have nightmares after that game. No LB during Coach Nick's Era has been as good defending the pass, and it's not even close, and only Rolando has been better at the run and it's not by much, maybe a hair. I hope he goes out on top! He's well on his way!

Cj is the most complete, but rolando was a force of nature it seemed. hard one to pick
As it stands, Ro. Then CJ, although CJ is as you said the more complete LB. He can fall into coverage better and will probably be a more productive LB at the next level but he will probably be an OLB and not put in the middle.

Just some numbers, for comparison (using last year for CJ as this year is obviously incomplete):
Code:
                           tackles sacks fumbles ints
Rolando McClain (2009): 105 4 1 2
CJ Mosely (2012): 107 4 0 2

I went with CJ although it was a tough call. I think it would be a crime for him not to win the Butkus award this year. Heck he should have won it last year over Lenay T'eo or whatever his name is.

I think it is CJ hands down. Rolando was a great leader on the field, but so is CJ. CJ is also a leader making tackles. Rolando didn't always lead in tackles. CJ is better in passing situations and despite his 2 drops last game, has better hands. I shutter to think what our defense would look like this year without CJ. I don't think we would be half as good and surely not undefeated. CJ has twice as many tackles as the next person. Plus, CJ coming back from a horrible injury in the NCG 2 years ago didn't even slow him down. With Ro and Donte, Upshaw, and Nico right up there, CJ could leave Bama in the top 3 in career tackles by the time he leaves. The only reason he doesn't have more is because we have a good defense and a good offense. Other tackle leaders had to deal with bad offenses that left defenses on the field too long.

I think CJ should also with the Butkus and Bednarik awards.
