Question: The current punter situation

We all know our biggest concern going into the 2010 season is at the punter position. Some friends and I were discussing all possible scenarios and one that came up was if any of the UA women's soccer players could be a decent punter on the football team. Granted the punter doesn't catch as much heat when things go bad as a kicker does. Just wanted to get people's thoughts on if Saban would look into this scenario?

I never really thought about it, but it's a great idea. I am sure one of the girls on the soccer team can punt a footbal 40-50 yards. That's something CNS may want to look into

If she can punt, I'm all for it. The only thing is... They are both fall sports. Although I don't think women's soccer plays on Sarurday's

I thought the CO gal was a PK, not a punter. Also, I can easily think of one TD Fitz saved this year. It's not fair to ask a woman to do that...

I don't think that things turned out very well for her either.

Is there a club soccer team? Gotta be a decent walk-on on campus.

The SECCG springs to mind. And if PJ doesn't make the tackle there, the game could've changed dramatically.

Do we not have a male soccer team?
No. To make equal opportunities for men and women to participate in intercollegiate sports, Alabama canned its men's soccer team. (How this improved women's opportunities I'm not sure).

There is, I believe, a men's club team.

There is definitely a club rugby squad, and I've wondered whether any of them can punt 40-50 yards. In Rugby, all players punt from time to time (sometimes wisely, sometimes not). Also any club soccer player or for that matter any student who was a star high school soccer player but chose Bama over a school with soccer schollys (most upper-tier schools have football but no men's soccer due to Title 9) would be a candidate. Any of you who watched the World Cup like me saw goalies and fullbacks who can loft a light soccer ball 60-80 meters.

Another point: the key here is the ability to get the ball to spiral. A person with the aforementioned leg strength and technique has to figure out how to hold the ball at that sweet angle to make it spiral like a deep pass from GMac. My brother played soccer in HS and now plays fly half for the BHM Rugby squad (Go Vulcans) and he learned it pretty well, but it's really hard.

From what I have heard about summer workouts, punter is not our biggest concern. Jay looks good, hope it does not change when he gets in front of 101,000.

It's a matter of confidence and I'm sure he'll be great...
Are you sure or confident that he will be great? ;) I am confident that his linebacker exp in HS will come in handy when and if he has to make a tackle. That exp will also hopefully help with the mental toughness required of kickers/punters.

I know everyone is worried about our kicking game this season but I don't think it will be enough of a weakness for us to lose a game. If we lose a game it will be because our offense or defense didn't perform like it should. I'm not saying that a game will not come down to a kick or a bad punt but that we will have to depend on the kickers because we didn't perform to the level we should. This years offense should be electric and when the young ones on defense get it going the defense should be more talented than last years.
