re: The ESPN Special 30 & 30 about Miami Hurricanes

i love how there is no mention of the beating they took in 92. its like it didnt happen. it goes from best thing ever to probation. not to mention lamar thomas running his mouth for most of the show. why did i watch this? i need to vomit

My sentiments exactly. The swagger came off the Miami program on 1 January 1993. What kind of documentary can ignore this game?

Did you also like their admitted thievery, drug use and drug sales? I don't mind swagger one bit. They were criminals...

i liked the swagger they had on the field what they do off the field is there choice yes they were criminals but you are taking it as if i said i liked the fact that they were criminals i jus liked the confidence they had they knew they couldnt be beaten and so many people wanted to beat them they just couldnt and miami knew that

I don't think that you can separate the two. They were willing to intentionally injure players on the other team for money. IMO, you can't respect the swagger without condoning the other stuff that happened on and off the field. It would be like applauding OJ Simpson. I don't care how good he was on the field - the other stuff wiped that away...

I liked the comment from Highsmith on how academics and college football dont belong together! So sad,,,Im not even sure they know "U" stands for university. They probably dont even know what it means!!!

I hated Miami then as much as the next bama fan, but I think some people's reaction that ESPN put this film out to promote what Miami did is a stretch. Like it or not, Miami in the 80's was the story in college football. For a lot of the wrong reasons, but they were HUGE. The film took a honest look at how the program was built and ran. If Schnellenberger doesn't bring in kids from the inner city and embrace their culture then I think Miami never has the same success in the 80s. Honestly I got a pretty good laugh at all the dancing and celebrating that went on then... I guess I've gotten so used the post excessive celebration era that I forgot about what players could get away with. And what about the Florida State rap video??? Can you imagine Saban letting our players do that? I thought the film was fascinating to see how the players were at a lot of times in control of the team. I agree with a lot of you that I was waiting and waiting for the 93 sugar bowl and it never came... oh well! It is what it is.

A flash in the pan! They were nothing before-in fact, a laughing stock. They played some decent ball for a brief time with nothing but thugs who all admitted to being such. Then, just as quick as they rose, they fell. And still haven't gotten back on their feet.

I watched it too, waiting for them to show the beat down we gave them.
As far as Lamar Thomas, I got him back for his trash talking last year at a U game, Check my post from last year:biggrin:
Lamar Thomas is still an arrogant thug. Too bad they didn't show George Teague running his butt down, and owning him. I had forgotten how much I hate Miami, 'till I saw that trash. I'm glad they are irrelavent now. They don't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and USC, with their actions, and how they accomplished what they did in the 1980s. I hope they never find their way out of the wilderness they are in.

I think they're about to awaken...but thankfully, I'm hearing good things about Randy Shannon, their head coach. I've heard that has ZERO interest in running the type of program he played under back in the 80s.

Put it this way: His first move as HC? He removed the last names from the players jerseys to emphasize "team" instead of individuals.

He could earn a lot of respect from me if he runs a respectable program down there.

Same here. I watched almost the entire two hours of this crap, just waiting for them to get to the early 90's and say something along the lines of, "But it all came crashing down with a severe beating by Alabama in the 1992 Sugar Bowl," or similar. I especially wanted them to show the George Teague takeaway from Lamar Thomas.

But that's the media for you.

A program like the one Miami had was denounced by all of college football. The part about where most of them came from Miami's inter city was a ridiculous excuse. Dennis Erickson and Jimmy Johnson should be ashamed of letting the inmates run that program and making excuses for those thugs actions.

Erickson had that program almost shut down and still he allowed himself to be in the filming as did Jimmy Johnson. Two clowns IMHO who allowed thuggery and chaos.

Funny how ESPN did not show the 1992 game with all the windy lipped thugs. Alabama 34 - 13.

Lamar Thomas was fired two years ago for he comments about getting down on the field and joining the fight between Miami and FIU. You can take Lamar out of the hood but you can not take the hood out of Lamar. Same person who was run down by George Teague who took the ball away from him. I got the picture and in caption Lamar crying with a towel over his head.

Like a fart in the wind Miami only lasted long enough to stink up college football for a brief time.

I'll say I may regret wasting that 2 hours of my life someday, but to me it was interesting seeing how it all came about. Plus it's giving us all something to talk about and pass the time. I may go insane before 20+ days are up.......I've lost count because it seems like an eternity......

I was younger then and didn't keep up CF like I do now, so I learned a lot from watching. It is pretty funny thinking about how they were up for so many years straight and after '93 they were DONE. So I say BAMA can claim that as another credential.

As far as their program now, well I may get strung up for saying this, but IMO you can't blame RS and the players they have now for the past. I for one am going to give this new ERA a chance until they mess it up.
