The hit on Tim Castille

First, I hope for a speedy and full recovery for Tim Castille, Ray Hudson, Brodie Croyle and all other injured players.

Now to the point of my post. Is there not a rule against spearing? Something was brought up about this when Hudson was injured against Kentucky. The Kentucky player led with his helment. The same thing happened last Saturday to Castille. Are these hits not illegal?

I can't believe Alabama's injury luck. I hurt for the team, but most of all for the players.

That's what I was thinking. Unless flags are thrown, players will continue to suffer these season-ending injuries. Sometimes I wonder if the refs know the rules they're trying to enforce.

In the heat of action, it's hard to call a hit like Castille suffered illegal. Generally, you see spearing called when a player is already down on the ground and someone comes in leading with the helmet.

I don't believe the hit was malicious, but it was illegal. More importantly, the DB that made the hit could have broken his neck. If spearing and hitting with the head down isn't enforced, more players will sustain neck injuries. I hate losing one of our best players for the rest of the year, but it could have been the Tennessee player's ability to walk for the rest of his life. Spearing is no joke.

I don't think it was intentional either. But like you guys have said, its illegal and it causes major injuries. Its the same way with "chop" blocking and blocking in the back.

It was a legal hit in college and the NFL,the only difference is in the NFL players are fined by the league for making such hits.
The NFL has fined alot of players and even put some on probation.A few of these players are labeled as dirty players.

I hate it for Tim just as much as anyone else does but it was legal even though his intent was to do more than just make the tackle.

In the Ray Hudson injury, the player was blocked into Hudson. It was unintentional.
I agree with Rays being unintentional but Tim was blind sided in the open field, Tim never saw him coming.

I am telling you all that is was malicious. It was a Tony Bua hit. Anyone see the cheap shot that turd had Sun? These guys see the play coming especially the weak screen that Tim got. The guy that hit him is a total *** Hol#. This crap is a reflection of the coaching staff. Low lifes to the end IMHO.

This seems to be the one thing over looked. That was the slowest screen pass I've ever seem, the SS was zeroed in on Tim before the ball left SP hand, poor play selection. Poorer execution.

No but there is a difference between tattooing Riddell on someones chest the way players are taught and taking the cowardly way out by trying to permanently end someones playing career.

Remember one thing...

They don't have to be actively coached how to do it - most of them know precisely how to do it. What it takes is not being coached NOT to do it. That, and approval of the results...
