Anyone know what changes are going to be made to the Joe during the off-season? I read recently that some major cosmetic work is going to be done to make it blend with the new football building and renovated Coleman Coliseum...was wondering if anyone knew some specifics or if Coach Wells was looking for anything in particular.

For one of the best college parks I've been to...check out Dick Howser Field at Florida State...they just completed a big renovation in Tallahassee...it would be nice if we could get the Joe looking that good. The inside is almost a carbon copy of Sewell-Thomas.

Now if we could grow our grass back...

I don't know what the specific improvements will be, but I am not equating the term "cosmetic changes" with renovation. I am sure that the modifications to the exterior of Sewell-Thomas will look nice, but as for any major upgrades comparable to Dick Howser Stadium - don't get your hopes up. With everything else that is going on, a project of that scale would likely require more money than the school is willing to spend on Sewell-Thomas right now. As for the most pressing needs, one is already being addressed (restoring the infield). If only we could find a new scoreboard...

I don't know what they qre going to do after the season, but they better do something about the infield grass NOW! It is in the worst condition I have seen in seven or eight years.

Jojo, isn't that a relatively new scoreboard?</font>
Well, I'm not JoJo, but I can answer your question. That scoreboard is relatively new; it was installed before the 2001 season. Although it is a beautiful scoreboard with "Alabama" spelled out at the top in large, white letters, it never operates properly. Lightbulbs are constantly out on the score part, and the part where the current batter is displayed works about every other game. Usually, for at least one game per season, it breaks down completely.

Also, I don't know if this is the board or the person operating the board, but usually at least once per at bat, when they put the balls and strikes up, the number advances several times more than it should. Up until this year, it usually just advanced one more than it should. For example, after the first ball, the scoreboard showed 2 balls. Then, the operator would have to go back and take the ball off the board. Several times, I witnessed people sitting around me thinking there was one ball or one strike more than there was because they glanced at the board in between the time when it first came up and when the operator took it off the board. Now, this year, the number no longer advances one more than it should-instead it advances all the way to 9! That's right-at every game this year, at least once per inning, there have been either 9 balls or 9 strikes on the batter!
