What makes a martini dirty? I need to know every thing there is to know about a martini, so that I dont look like an idiot when i order one.
I might also add that a Martini is always made with gin but many people prefer a Vodka Martini. Martini's have become so trendy lately that they are being made with all sorts of stuff. It is to the point a Martini is now anything that is served in a Martini glass. Some places have what they call a Martini Menu.

I thought I had read on a post here on the board that Bayou had come up with the original Drano and broken glass martini.....Is that correct?:pDT_drug:

I am one who prefers a vodka martini (grey goose). My wife makes a mean one, for sure.

Martini Bar here in Virginia Beach; There are 6 top quality vodkas is in a freezer and the ice cold sprits are drawn from individual taps, as you would draft beer. These taps are frosted over, even iced at times. The bar itself has a metal plate about a foot back from the railing that runs the length of the bar that remains frozen for us patrons to sit our glass.

Bayoutider, did you get the metal martini glasses? My metal martini glasses and vodka (Gin too, and GOOD Tequila) are stored in a freezer.

I read that for martinis, it is best to keep the vodka/gin at room temp. that way when you mix it with the ice, water is added, giving it a more rounded flavor---- whatever that means.

But some people say they prefer the more "sharp" flavor that comes from using freezer temp spirits.

I say that about GOOD scotch; pour over a bit of ice if you must, or neat with a splash and only a splash of water to "wake it up". But not vodka, by my way of thinking, but I just like to make em and drink em :sifone:. The russians and other eastern european folks have been known to shoot iced vodka followed by a bite of dill pickle much like tequila shots with lime/salt; The ole lick the salt, shoot the tequila and suck the lime or after 6 or so of those its; lick the tequila, suck the salt and shoot the lime.

BTW, I keep my grey goose in the freezer also. But tequila, I keep in the fridge. I like it chilled, but not that cold when doing shots.

My Belvedere Vodka lives in the freezer, the Absolute is on the bar shelf. I keep peppermint schnapps in the fridge. Scotch is poured over ice at my house.

Why the Absolute on the shelf instead of the freezer? Just curious. Our Grey Goose is always in the freezer as well.

Ive tried to be sophisticated and drink martinis, but I guess they are just not for me. The last time I made em, i had 4 of em and i was wasted. I dont see how you guys drink them.. its basically drinking straight liquor. Thats fine for shots, but a glass full of it is too much for me.

Basically two options on this one:

1. We sip and "nurse" our martinis.

2. We are rip roaring alcoholics with great tolerance. :cheers2:

I'll let you make the call.

I love the taste of a good martini. I rarely drink, so 1-2 is enough for me.
