The REAL reason Saban left Miami because Dolphins are getting sold

Nick Saban may have taken the Bama job in a desire to "return to othe college ranks", but the driving factor was Wayne Huizenga's inability to promise NS that he was not selling the team.

The Dolphins franchise is in play. I have this news from the most trustworthy of sources. During Saban's conversations with WH he asked for his word that he was not planning to sell the team within the next 5 years. WH would not give him that assurance because he is CURRENTLY talking to interested buyers.

I can furnish mods the details if interested.

maybe WH is....but it wasn't THE REAL reason Saban left the Dolphins. If that were the case, we'd hear Saban's name mentioned in the openings with the Steelers or Cardinals. He wouldn't have come back to college if that's where his he didn't really want to be.

I'm not denying that Nick and Terry wanted to return to the college ranks. However, Nick felt a HUGE sense of loyalty to WH. When WH confirmed (privately) that the Fins were in play NS asked for his blessing to bolt and that blessing was granted.

The Fins ownership will likely change before the Superbowl is over.

hard to say. I am friends with someone who, because he is friends with the person was going to buy the Dolphins, was 100% certain that the Dolphins were being sold a couple of weeks ago.

Then, a week later, WH comes out publicly and says "the Dolphins are not for sale."

again, hard to say.

Crimson-Blitz - I would be very interested in seeing your sources.

Huizenga recently and strongly denied the team was for sale. He also recently stated that he was willing to spend whatever amount of money was necessary to make the Dolphins a winner. He's poured millions into Dolphins Stadium for upgrades, new HD scoreboards, etc - which will be seen at the Super Bowl. There are also plans to further expand the stadium as a destination (with shopping and restaurants) rather than just a place to go tailgate two hours before a game.

If he's selling, why all the expenditures? Maybe the argument could be made that he's trying to get maximum dollar for the whole team and stadium - but, WH is not the type of businessman to spend money and not recoup it on down the road. Plus, Dolphins merchandise is consistently in the top 5 of all NFL teams, win or lose.

"Pro Player Stadium" was a $20 million deal where all WH had to do was leave the parent company of Fruit of the Loom underwear's logo on the outside of the stadium. Pro Player went bankrupt before the ten year agreement was over, but Wayne already had his 20 buckaroos in the bank.

WH is big on branding and owning brands, and the Dolphins is a cash cow for him.

I know for a fact Terry wanted to be in Tuscaloosa. And, as a marrried man, I can testify: "If moma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

But, we're not going to leave Mr. Saban out.

Of all the years while he was at LSU, he never said anything negative about Bama. As a matter of fact, at the SEC Media Days in 2001, while Lou Holtz was slamming Bama with "the best players money could buy", Saban found the charges against Bama hard to believe and said it was a very unfortunant situation that Bama was in, and found nothing funy about it at all.

I always thought Saban and Bama would be a nice fit.

I agree that WH recently said that there was NO TRUTH to rumors about a possible sale, but again, this is business...just like the coach, what do you want him to say?

I don't know if this is accurate or not, but I can tell you that there have been more reports that he is considering selling (at least a portion of the team) than there have showing his denials.

Should the Dolphins be sold, would we get a cut? After all they appear to be our farm team for developing coaches.

Based on what I've read, and what Saban and his wife have said, I think there are several reasons he left Miami, and the possibility of a sale is pretty far down the list.

In order, here's why I think Saban left Miami:
1. He really does like the college game better.

2. He and his wife were not happy in Miami.

3. Miami isn't such a great place to raise a 15-year-old girl whose father is a major celebrity with all the trappings that go along with that.

4. He was 6-10 this year, and didn't think next year would be any better -- D is getting old, there's no QB (Culpepper is beaten to a pulp, has seen his best days, and didn't have Chris Carter or Randy Moss to throw to), and that probably wouldn't change next year. So it's true that he didn't finish the job he came to do in Miami, but it wouldn't be finished any time soon anyway.

4A. With all that, the possibility of a sale was out there.

5. There are very few college jobs that compare to Alabama, and they don't come open very often. Count 'em: Texas, Florida, FSU, the real USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska. So if you have the chance, you take one when it's offered.

I'm under no illusions that Saban has any particular attachment to Alabama right now. It was one of a handful of college jobs that would have interested him, and it came open. For only the third time in 50 years, our timing was right -- Bryant, Bowden (which we ourselved botched) and Saban.

In time, if the administration plays it right and makes sure he gets left alone (and as long as Witt is there, they will), Saban will get the Crimson thing, and develop a real affection for the University.

The one college job I could see him leaving us for is Penn State. It's one of the few elite jobs, and it's close to home. And we all know how much of a draw "home" is. We'll need that affection when Paterno retires and Saban is offered that job.

If CNS is planning to retire in Ga, Why would he want to go to Penn State? I know that he is from WV. But has GA. on his mind;)

I think he was in BR when he bought that place and that's a long drive. If I get unlazy, I might run the mileages. Like Obomanu should have done when he said that Selma was closer to Auburn than T-Town...

I keep seeing where ya'll ( a great many posters) think that CNS will eventually take the Penn State job.
I live in CT and coach HS football here and it is widely understood around here that Greg Schiano will be the next coach at PSU. I hear this constantly from other HS coaches, and both PSU & RU alums. So I think we can stop worrying that CNS will be leaving us for that position in the next few years. Ya'll need to sit back and enjoy what is going to be a fun time to be an Alabama fan! :) RTR

Sounds good.

Are you close to Bristol? If so, could you go to ESPN and slap some sense into those folks.:biggrin2:
Thanks
