Can't we at least script one play a game where we throw it to the tight end? ...or was Mr Walker covered most of the day?
"mr walker" was not covered most of the day

could be a variety of reasons that he didn't get a ball -
one possibility is that brodie was looking more for the homeruns or maybe just trying to go to the more experienced receivers

but, more than likely, it goes under the heading of "not showing too much of the playbook in the first game"

jmo, but i think we will definitely see the tight end get more and more looks as the season progresses

-just my 2

We've all seen tight ends take over a game haven't we? Remember what Jason Whitten did to us several years ago... I do, won't forget it! What about the TE from Miami last night? Awesome play..... I've screamed it for years... the TE opens it up for you (an effective TE i might add, that's the key).

Considering the possible problems on the OL, the tight end was used as a blocker in the game. Protect the QB.

Brodie has a habit of keying in on certain receivers. He has got to start getting Nick the ball.
Well, Brodie did complete passes to 8 different players.

The way MTSU was laying off our receivers and playing the deep ball it shouldn't be surprising that the WR corps got all but 5 completions. You shouldn't have to check down to your 3rd read when your WR is wide open 5-10 yards down the field.

My only critique is that I wish Brodie would have recognized how much they were playing the deep ball when he chucked the interception and had thrown it short or thrown it away instead.

A tight end is the ultimate safety valve and can also be a gamebreaker. Look at what Jeff Fisher did with the Titans when Wycheck (sorry for the sp.) was playing. They force the linebackers to stay at home and are a big load to bring down in the open field. Like others said I look for us to open up the passing game more when we enter the meat of our schedule. I also have noticed that BC keys in on recievers and has the tendency to not read through his progression. Could this be because he reads the D before the snap and prematurely decides where he is going with the pass?

Agree with Oskie -- why reveal the whole play book in the first game? It makes sense that if we can beat a team with just a few plays, use them and save the rest for the big boys later. Makes sense to me.

I read elsewhere that Walker was one of two options on a couple of plays, but not the option chosen. So, plays were called where he could have gotten the ball.

that is correct. i have broken down every play of the game on film and i know walker was open at least twice. one was in the south end zone, one on one with a safety. it could have been an easy TD but BC went to TP in the flat and it was incomplete. Another was on third down later in the game. NW ran a curl route and was open in the middle. TP ran a drag across the field a BC tried to get to him, but it was broken up. I dont think that if we were to throw to the tight end it would ruin our gameplan for future games. heck, the other teams see the TE out in a route, so they know it is a possibility. he didnt just stay in and block all night. he was out in routes quite often.

I've been screaming it too

I'm sorry but I just don't buy that...not showing the entire play book stuff. That would have just given future opponents one more thing to worry about. Walker is talented and must be utilized. I just don't understand not getting it to an SEC tight end against an opponent who would probably have to send three guys to tackle him due to there size problems. I wanted Bama just to dare MTSU to tackle him. Hopefully, it will change next week against S. Miss.

Guys,

normally I would agree with you. I believe the TE is underutilized on the whole. This team is different. We need blocking. We need more on the line to handle the D.

With this said, I do believe we should be reading the D to determine whether the TE blocks or acts a receiver.

i agree, the tight end is becoming more of a offensive weapon in college and pro football these days. i was concerned while watching the mike shula show, when he was waxing eloquently about prothro and all his skills to the team, which there are many, i still remember the perfect pass across the middle when he took his eyes off the ball and dropped it. the point being, a big tight end should be making some of those plays. at some point prothro could get injured trying too many of those kind of plays. i believe we have enough skill position players now to utilize them, unless the offensive line needs the tight end on every down for blocking. i think we will see more screens later as well.

First...

I doubt that we have the OL skills yet to make the toss sweep work. Second, isn't it nice to be quibbling about who among the receivers is getting slighted - after eight people catch the ball? :D

I'll bite. Injuries aside (such as those that would limit mobility), what OL skills are required to make the toss sweep work?

A side note, I came away from the Auburn game last year thinking that we kept trying up the middle inside the 10 because we had linemen with leg injuries that would have hampered their running. Was that part of the reasoning for the play calling, at least as far as what kind of runs were called?
