It seems Nick has had his eye on CTR for a while now, this from 247. I vaguely remember this a few years back

.
Although it was never widely discussed publicly, this media outlet revealed a few years ago that when then-head coach Brian Kelly considered successors to Chip Long as offensive coordinator after Rees’ debut coordinator performance in the 2019 Camping World Bowl against Iowa State, Rees had a flight planned for Tuscaloosa to meet with Saban.
Rees was elevated to offensive coordinator, the flight south was canceled and Rees began what is, up to this point, a three-year run as the head of Notre Dame’s offense.
At the time, the position of offensive coordinator likely wasn’t on the table at Alabama for the 27-year-old Rees. It probably was quarterbacks coach or some title that would have placed Rees in a No. 2 or 3 spot behind a seasoned offensive coach.

I think Its a good hire. Keep in mind that they will run the Alabama offense, just with a little Coach Rees flare. I also believe Nick was impressed with how Notre Dame used the TEs, as Nick has made an effort the last 4-5 years to try and develop that position as an offensive weapon. It just hasn’t worked out.
CTR is young, can relate to players and should be a recruiting force With the Alabama name behind him . Plus , it’s a little bit of a middle finger to Baton Rouge’s Dirty Dancer!
I don’t think we have really used a TE since OJ!

From what I'm reading...

Saban wanted to hire Rees a couple of years ago as QB coach.

Kelly promoted Rees to OC at ND, so he stayed at ND rather than joining the staff at Bama.

Kelly wanted Rees to go with him to LSU as OC.

Those 3 things tell me Saban knows the potential in Rees and believes he will be a good fit for the Tide.

One more point...he's young and will likely be the OC for several years. I don't see him leaving Bama for another OC position and it will be a few years before he's viable as a HC candidate. That provides continuity for our offense.

All of that is good. I think this may turn out to be a really good hire.

Last season Bama ran 51% and passed 49% while Notre Dame ran 61% and passed 39%. I don't know if that was because Rees is more conservative or if he simply didn't have the QB to do anything else. If Rees is more conservative and Saban wants to get back to more power football due to UGA's success then maybe that is why he chose Rees. I think in today's game though that kind of offense can only work if you have a Top 5 defense like UGA.

Funny, The trend in the NFL is 12-13 personnel, same for some FBS teams . You can do so much with those formations, especially with athletic TEs. Yet, Notre Dame fans complain about the 2-3 TE sets. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t want to see it all the time as we simply have too much wideout talent, but it would create Mismatches especially in short yardage.
I will however reserve judgement until I see the formations in action. We thought CBoB would bring in a similar mindset from his days as OC in New England. That didn’t happen.
