Trick Plays in our Pro Style Offense

I was wondering what people on the board thought about the lack of trick plays in our pro style offense. I know you don't see them very much in the NFL, and maybe that's why you don't see them with us because of Shula's background. I may be missing a few, but the only variation of a surprise or trick play last year came on a reverse to K.Brown on the final drive of the UT game last year. Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?

I'm sure every team we face this year will be prepared for the naked Prothro bootleg we run. A real trick play would be if he handed the ball off or threw a pass...I guess the most unexpected play would be a reverse to Brodie. Lately, I would think a toss sweep would be a trick play in our playbook, that would completely catch me off guard.

I"m just guessing here

but I've seen Terry P say something to the effect that CMS would like to be like University of Miami in that they just line up and pretty much ram it down your throat, nothing fancy or crazy, just execute.

I kind of like that but I don't think Alabama has the personnel (especially on the O and D lines) to consistently do that. In time, I think that's a real possibility but not now. 2-3 more very good recruiting classes and the Tide will be there to do that.

We are saving the toss sweep for this weekend. I recall us running several reverses, with KB and TP. Prothro did line up at QB vs. LSU and handed off to KD. I'm still waiting on the flea flicker(they run that in the NFL sometimes), the HBPass, and the WR reverse pass. A fake FG or fake punt would also be fun to see in the right situation.

I'm sure they got some type of play or plays with JJ at TB. I wouldn't be suprised to see JJ on a toss sweep and throw it back to BC. We also lined up in the wishbone agasint Auburn last year.

Trick plays are risky. I prefer to line up with the best palyers at their position and run a play designed to take advantage of something that the defense is giving you. Not too long ago, that meant running the ball down their throats. Not so, this year... :frown:

I am all for an old fashioned flea flicker - can you imagine the separation Dj and Keith Brown could create on that play!

I'm just ready for this offense to use the entire field in both the running game and passing game. The majority of our running game is up the gut and the majority of our passing game is sideline passing or a deep bomb.

I'd like to see the running game get our backs in space to create one on one situations with sweeps and runs off the edges instead of constantly up the gut.

I'd like to see the passing game use the area between the hash marks instead of first going to the sidelines with the deep passes.

I think (scratch that, I KNOW) when we get to playing SC, Tenn, Auburn, LSU and Florida that if we don't mix it up a bit they'll be licking their chops.

Since when are reverses considered trick plays?? They are misdirection plays...and there is nothing tricky about them. Let's face it...this offense...it's pretty bad.

I can definitely see the parallels between what we do and what Miami does...but quite simply Miami has twice the talent of Bama and their depth is superior.

Haven't seen anything to warrant that thinking YET. Croyle will break more school records if he stays healthy, We have a solid group of RBs, WRs. The "O" hasn't consistently clicked yet this year but there have been flashes...Watching our opening drive against USM last week, how can you think the O is "bad".

The offense was bad last year. Tap the brakes on the criticism and let the team play a couple more games. I hope my homerism for BAMA isn't clouding my judgement but I really don't see a "pretty bad" offense. The system that Shula and Rader have implemented looks fine so far and I'll take our skill position players vs anyone elses ANYTIME.

And besides our "D" is where the money will be made this year if it is to be a good or even great season. The 1992 team had a pretty bland offensive system - a hundred times more so than what is in place now.

30 points and 470 yards agasint USM is pretty good in my book. Last year it was bad. 470 yards and the O is bad? Please!

i think that the

anexation of Puerto Rico is being devised as we speak. The TB pass with Johns is pretty tempting maybe a hook and lateral to Prothro from Hall, or the Ole Swinging gate. Dang I miss the days of the ole fumblerooskie.

I'm not a huge fan of trick plays but they can be pretty effective if you don't rely on them and only use them once in a blue moon to keep DC's from keying in on them during film review.

One thing I liked about the Dubose era when Zow was the QB was the vast amount of formations we ran from the LOS. This isn't really trickery but more of overload. I would have hated to try and defense against that 1999 Offense and even further, would have hated to try and learn that playbook.

Think about it, this play has been set up for 2 years now. Prothro at QB on a naked bootleg and handing off to a WR or Slot on a reverse. Can you image the Defense breaking their ankles after practicing this particular simualtion all week at practice. It will be sweet...Trust me.
