True freshman who played; redshirt questions

Re: Redshirts

I may not know what I'm talking about, but I think using all of the players had a double effect on recruiting:

1) As a freshman, I know that I can get on the field and compete for playing time. So if me llamo es Julio, I know that I will be the star that I am immediately, no concerns of depth whatsoever.

2) If I am a very good QB who might be a "Star" in my own right, I won't be stuck behind a RS Fanuzzi.

Just my 2 cents.
I hope that "Star" makes up all happy on Tuesday. Someone stated it earlier. Look Nick will be a career backup. The experience is what he needs.

Re: Redshirts

CNS has made comments several times that he didn't see so and so play last year. He didn't know what so and so has done in the past. My thought is that CNS is still evaluating his talent and there is not better way to do that than in actual game situations. I imagine CNS has already gone over the game film at least twice by now. You gotta love his drive, determination, and knowledge of how to be successful.
That is a refreshing change in coaching style. I recall players with potential in the recent past who left the team without ever getting an opportunity to show what they could do in a game situation, because they were evaluated only on the practice results, or because they were not one of the favorites.

Re: Redshirts

I think that CNS is evaluating Shula's talent, not his. His plan is to build his program for the future. Like he says "it is a process"...part of that process is evaluating who, on this present team, can compete with the talent level of the players that he will recruit for his future team.

I don't think that he is worried about red shirts right now. Recruiting is his and his coaching staff's strong suit and therefore he is confident that he will recruit players that can and will play as freshmen. He is looking two years down the road and I think he wants to give players like NF the best chance to win, or not win their starting position as juniors and seniors.

Maybe, just maybe this is Saban's way of sending a message to Julio Jones. Come to Alabama and I'll play the best player even a true freshman.

And if you'll notice, this is the same message that Pete Carroll is sending about USC.

i believe, the coach with so few quality players from last year, is attempting to fill the void in depth with freshmen. this may be the only year coach saban is in this spot. with the new class for 2008 we will continue to see talented recruits coming on board. this year is a real test at critical areas. with the departure of barnes, we need 3 qbs available. def line, missing several positions even starting middle guard experience. secondary, needs help, i dont think he is happy with depth at all in secondary. starting a freshman tb is unusual, and we need depth, and the quality of mr. grant. glad to see coffee return. i have a feeling we will see a lot of defensive linemen get playing time. i sure hope prince hall returns, we need his toughness, and skills from last year.

Have all you guys forgotten that there has been talk about the NCAA doing away with the redshirt rule and just allowing 5 years in which to play 5. Sure, nothing has been decided and no action has been taken. I don't even think a proposal has yet been made; however, there is talk. Personally, I think this would be a good rule change. Also, it would put to bed the talk of "burning redshirts."

He is probably looking at Coach Shula's talent too, but the freshmen under discussion such as Fanuzzi were in Coach Saban's first recruiting class.

This idea crossed my mind too...do we have any idea if they would do it retroactively? Or are they to that stage of the discussion yet? Like say they pass it before next season, Fanuzzi would still have 4 years left. Or would the new rule only apply to incoming freshmen and every class thereafter?

I don't know and I'd bet they don't even know yet. Hopefully, they would make the rule apply to any player with any eligibility remaining.
