Trump Attacks Iran, III

Help me out here. We're blockading the Strait of Hormuz because Iran's blockading it.

What the actual you-know-what are we doing?
The idea is blocking the strait strangles Iran's economy. Iran blockaded it but was letting their oil out and supplies in - by blocking all traffic, the US can squeeze Iran's economy dramatically. Good thread here defining the strangulation:

The U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would cost Iran approximately $276M/day in lost exports and disrupt $159M/day in imports, a combined economic damage of ~$435M/day, or $13B/month.Over 90% of Iran's $109.7B in annual trade transits the Persian Gulf. Oil/gas accounts for 80% of government export earnings and 23.7% of GDP.

By clearing the strait for all non-Iranian-bound traffic, the US keeps the world markets from taking massive hits while choking the Iranian economy:

U.S. to Blockade Ships Entering or Exiting Iranian Ports
TAMPA, Fla. — U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces will begin implementing a blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports on April 13 at 10 a.m. ET, in accordance with the President’s proclamation.
The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. CENTCOM forces will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports.
Additional information will be provided to commercial mariners through a formal notice prior to the start of the blockade. All mariners are advised to monitor Notice to Mariners broadcasts and contact U.S. naval forces on bridge-to-bridge channel 16 when operating in the Gulf of Oman and Strait of Hormuz approaches.

we're throwing crap at the wall to try to get out of the corner that this moron painted us into?
We have a guy with six business bankruptcies who thinks he’s a business genius screwing with the world’s economy.

“I can fully understand how you got that impression.”

I think it’s going to get worse and it’s already over.

We peaked as a civilization in the 1990’s and we are now headed towards a Dystopian society.

It might be painstakingly slow or some event might accelerate it but it’s over.

I've gotten to the point where I wish I would not have had kids simply because of what they're going to experience in their lifetime.

About 10 years ago I started feeling retroactively glad that I never had kids for the same reasoning.

As far as I can though I feel empathy towards all current parents even when I know I can’t fully understand the shoes they are in wrt the current political and societal landscapes.

The Top 1% is causing so much suffering to the lower 99% and yet because of financial hardships and familial relationships and responsibilities no one can risk doing anything to enact collective change.

The most peaceful resistance I can think of is a nation wide shutdown/protest.

Just in the sense of a hypothetical thought exercise if almost everyone just refused to show up to work tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that and tens of thousands of people marched on DC and blockaded the White House to stop this madness what would they do?

These people can not act right and nothing will make them change but a collective we the people movement.

But in a real world practical sense no one is willing to make a stand because they are worried about security and feeding and taking care of their immediate loved ones… and not that that isn’t important too.

But if we never say enough is enough then as a society we will continue to devolve and future generations will continue to suffer more hardships.

I don’t have any actionable solutions but it’s extremely depressing and discouraging and such a helpless feeling.

What could possibly go wrong?
While trump is an unqualified fool, our military may be able to pull this off. If they can, it will put a strangle hold on whats left of Irans economy and maybe prod a civil uprising. 🤷‍♀️

Sorry you feel that way. For me, this is the best things have ever been. And it's been at peak-awesome since I moved to Florida from DC six years ago. We long ago stopped concerning ourselves about the idiots in DC since they don't care about us. We have focused on our family's prosperity and doing things that make us happy (like combining charity work with international travel). Life is what you make of it. We choose happiness and making life better for as many people as possible.

No doubt in my mind we are on the downhill slope as a country. I'm old enough, I'll be fine. But it makes me angry what we've done to my kids and grandkids. Really bitter.
