The wife and I are going to the Bama - Hawaii game this fall. (Hopefully we will win since the only other Bama game she has been to was the loss to Northern Illinois back in 2003.)

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get a hotel room in Tuscaloosa on game weekends? I check online and could only find Motel 6 out by McFarland Mall. Really do not want to stay there.... I called the 800#'s for the Sheraton, Hampton Inn, Courtyard and Fairfield Inn. All of them told me you had to call the hotels direct. When I called direct they tell me they are sold out for 2006. The guy at the Courtyard told me unless you are a "prominent alumni" you will never get a room.

Yeah you're probably out of luck for the upcoming season. You probably can find one in Bessemer. I believe its the #106 exit that has several new hotels and eating places. Thats only about 35 miles (exit #71 is the 359/69exit) from Tuscaloosa.

There are also a number of hotels in the Hoover area just of I-459. I live in Hoover and it is about 45 miles. We drive down (early) and back (late) on game days and it is not too bad. Staying in Hoover will give you access to a lot of shopping and dining if that is important to you on a weekend visit.

The Winfrey in Hoover is Great!!! Stay in the executive levels I think floors 13-15 I think to get free food and drinks. Also alcohol is really cheap up there.

We live in Atlanta and drive over for all home games, so we're in hotels a bunch. Not being a "prominent alumni" I have found Priceline is the best option. If you set it for a 3-star in Birmingham, you'll usually be able to get the downtown Sheraton (with the best beds in the hotel biz) for around $50/night.

We made reservations at the Motel 6 on McFarland. I am just affraid it will be nasty. When we travel we usually stay at the Doubletree, Marriott or Marriott Courtyard. Anyone ever stayed at the Motel 6?

I did find out from the manager at the Ramada Inn he will be opening up football game weekends on March 1st at 12:01AM. (ie about 10 hours from now.) He advised the rooms will probably be gone by 12:30AM and already has people lined up waiting. I will be calling at 12:01 AM.

The Ramada Inn...is that the one on Skyland Blvd across from the grocery store? If so, and it's in the shape it used to be, it's a six of one, half dozen of the other compared to Motel 6.

Terry, is the Motel 6 at least in a safe area? Would I need to worry about my safety while staying there?

Just spoke with them on the phone and they will not begin accepting reservations for home game weekends until sometime in March. I stayed here for each home game last season and was pleased with both the rates and the rooms.

It's a Motel 6...along the same quality as the Ramada and the Howard Johnson so you know you get what you pay for.

Safe? I wouldn't worry about it personally. Lock the car doors...you probably should expect to hear a party or two going on...noises in the parking lot with people coming in late that night...but that's about it. The bars close at earlier than during the weekdays so you'll get a few hours sleep. Sleep in Sunday, ya know?

It's close to just about everything...from fast food to steak houses (Outback to the East...and a few to the West on Skyland...O'Charley's, etc. N or McFarland...Walmart just down the road. Hey, it's about a mile....maybe a mile and a qtr to Dreamland.

I would advise to stay at the Jameson Inn or Howard Johnson instead of Motel 6 or Ramada Inn.

Jameson Inn is a nice hotel located beside Lowe's and Outback Steakhouse on Oscar Baxley Drive. Exit 72a I-59

Howard Johnson is less than 2 years old and is located just off exit 76 I-59.

Good luck and Roll Tide

Thanks Terry!

I know the area was ok when I was there 1990-1995. Since leaving BAMA I have gone to a couple of games each season but, for whatever reason they have been road games, bowl games or games in B-Ham. The lone exception was the No. Illinois game in 2003. We got raped by Super 8 for $159+ tax.

I guess I will keep Motel 6. As long as it is safe and clean $60 a night is not bad. If I am going to spend $150 a night in T-Town I am going to stay at the Sheraton next to campus or the Marriott Courtyard. I can not stand how the hotels price gouge 6 or 7 weekends out of the year.

They really don't have a choice. Look at any major market and how hotel prices work when there are big events. Even the $50 hotel rooms in Vegas go for $250 when CES is in town. It's simple market economics. As long as people will pay it, they'll continue to charge the price.

It's actually nicer right now in terms of hotels - when I left campus in 96 there were 1/2 the hotel rooms that are there now.

I am sure it will never be prosecuted but, if I understand correctly, they could be violating the law. On the back of the hotel door they must state what the maximum rate they charge for a room. I know when we stayed at the Super 8 it stated the max was $99.00 per night plus tax. We complained to Super 8 after the fact b/c the manager in T-Town could care less, and they gave us a $75 voucher good at any Super 8.

Maybe with the 12th football game some more hotels will be built to help with the lack of rooms on game weekends.

Would you be happier if their standard price were $250 a night and they gave deep discounts every night except football Saturdays?
