UAB fires Dilfer. How long until it’s Bama’s Fault?

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

My neighbor is a retired Army Colonel. He went to the UAB-Army game a few weeks ago. He told me the next day, “that guy at UAB is about to be canned. His team has quit on him…..if they actually ever WERE a team. You can tell by their actions on the sideline. Their body language says it all. That wasn’t a football team we played. It was a bunch of guys in football uniforms pretending to be players”.

Wasn’t the Dilfer hire the most “UAB thing” ever? I believe there were other candidates with more coaching experience but they hired him because he was a “former NFL Super Bowl Winning QB” that had some name recognition.

I took my wife to the Akron game and it was gate to gate depressing.

Akron was the consensus worst team in America in FBS at the time and wasn’t even eligible for a bowl due to academic issues, yet almost won the game.

Maybe 5K in attendance. I drank about 3 white claws to numb it.

I also take major issue that the UAB community looks down on us who are also Bama fans. I just stay out of all of it and enjoy the atmosphere.

This hire was a mistake from the beginning. This hire reminds me of nd hiring Jerry Faust from Cincinnati Moeller High School Moeller was a power for many years but going to nd was a mistake by both parties. Dilfer did a decent job a Lipscomb High School in Nashville and was decent in the pros as a QB but a head college coach those things do not make.

Friends of mine from Lipscomb Academy were glad to be rid of him when he took the UAB job. Yes, he won there but was terrible with the kids/parents. Bill Clark did a great job there. The Mortensen kid learned from Coach Saban. They could do worse. Give him a shot.

I wonder if Scott Cochran's name will be in the mix. UAB football isn't going anywhere, so they'd might as well be good.

I think Trent Dilfer may be the worst QB ever to win a Super Bowl.
A team has to have some to take the snaps and hand off the ball, so he filled it, but he was quite bad as a QB.
Not saying he is a bad guy (I simply do not know), but on the list of QBs who have won a Super Bowl, he is probably the worst one in the year he won.

He came to Lipscomb at the beginning of my child's junior year, so I was only around him for a couple of years. My first impression of him was good, very congenial person, but he seemed to behave differently on the field vs. off the field. After witnessing a couple of incidents with his players during games, my good impression did not last very long.

To be clear, I think he's probably a really good guy off the field, but his "win at all costs" coaching style, mixed with an unhealthy dose of anger, is just not my idea of how to coach anything.

I do want to call attention to the fact that he was a key element in Tua's rehab/comeback from the hip injury in 2019. I really appreciated Trent's contribution to that process.

Here's a interview where Trent speaks about that 3 month period. He had nothing but great things to say about Tua. Less than 7 minutes. Well worth your time, if you are a Tua fan. :)

I vote to shut it down again. Y'all (they) can put the blame on me. They clearly don't care about football. Here's hoping we N.E.V.E.R. play them. Why would we? Same goes for scheduled hoops games, too. Anytime the hoop PTB can, they've made us matchup with them in the NCAA or NIT or other tournaments. Bartow sabotaged us in hoops in the 80's and I hope we never forgive it, forget it or give in.

Agreed. Never and ever.

We should play USA just to torque them.

It was a dumb hire to begin with. He had been at that high school four years. But apparently his SB ring was going to help. Never mind none of his players were born when he won. It’s funny reading their posts trashing him when they were singing his praises three years ago.

Whatever happened to Bill Clark? Didn’t he have some health issues?
