I, honestly, feel bad for UAB. They can't catch a break. They can't compete on the field. They land a has been coach when it seemed like they were going to try to make at least a semi big hire. Troy is now the state's 3rd football program. Now, this. Damn.

I just can't take joy in UAB's situation.

I heard on the news tonight that UAB will actually be able to count these 9 lost scholarships in last years class, so it's not going to effect them any at this point. However, I am in total disagreement with how the NCAA is punishing programs because of APR scores. Reducing scholarships is not the right way to punish a school. #1, it is taking opportunities away from future athletes who could have earned a scholarship to attend college (that is my biggest gripe). #2, This is going to hurt the smaller programs more than the larger ones, because the larger ones can afford to offer more academic support programs, which to me seems to contradict everything the NCAA has tried to do over the past 20 years. #3, it is giving schools more incentive to fudge players grades or to steer them to easy classes. #4, I'm not so sure that this is not a legal issue. I can foresee the NCAA getting sued by a potential student athlete or athletes in the future because of the limitations on scholarships. Once again, the NCAA is going out of it's way to enfore rules that don't make any sense, and will probably hurt the sport in the long run. It's fine to want to stress the importance of graduating and earning a degree, but there are better and more appropriate ways to punish programs who don't comply, such as loss of bowl games or revenue, loss of conference revenue, loss of TV exposure, etc.

I agree. This is just a sad attempt by the NZAA to justify it's own existence. IMO they do more harm than good, and it's time to vote them out of existence.

Frankly speaking, this is one of the dumbest rules ever imposed by the NCAA.

It cuts the amount of time coaches can spend recruiting quality student-athletes by not allowing them to recruit during the spring.

It cuts the amount of time coaches have to mentor and monitor players progress.

It limits the number of coaches.

It rants and raves about the amount of money colleges are spending on athletics.

It limits the number of scholarships ANYWAY to 25 per year and 85 total.

It collects billions of dollars and gives the players peanuts.

...And then imposes this lame, thoughtless rule on top of all those constraints?

"Stupid is as stupid does"

I have actually met real UAB fans and they are nothing but a bunch of jealous, bitter Jack.....es.

My wife has worked at UAB, at the school of physical therapy, for almost 20 years. Because of office politics, she has to make an appearance at one or two UAB games a year, usually homecoming. Because Legion Field is in a war zone, I go with her to the games.

Two years ago UAB was playing Troy for homecoming. Tailgating next to us were two male UAB fans in their mid 20's. They were UAB grads. They were listening to Alabama playing Florida, in Gainsville. They were pulling hard for Florida, making fun of Bama's tradition, making fun of Eli, and making fun of Kenny Stabler. Everytime Eli would say something positive about Bama they would yell at the radio for Eli to shut up. It took everything in me to shut up and try to ignore those two freaks. On the flip side, they also hated Auburn.

I'm sure that in the minds of the 3 or 4 UAB football fans, this is our fault because we won't play them. :) They could fix this problem by getting out of 1A football; their program is nothing but a drain on the UA system.

But, I think the APR rule is stupid and short-sighted.

I did not know the UAB grads went to the games. They need to drop football or go back to div 2. The could play there games at Regions Park and if highlites were shown it would like like someond did show up to watch. Legion field needs to be imploded.

It's a "voluntary" organization. Overall, I like the NCAA and think that there needs to be oversight in college athletics. Besides, it is the College Presidents that serve in making the rules.

The method of punishing an institution has always angered me.
If my neighbor to the right has a dog that barks all night, so I went to my neighbor to the left and killed his cat, it would make as much sense.
The transgressor is neither the university nor the future student-athletes who will now not get scholarships, but the students who don't study, don't seek help when in trouble, don't perform in class. Why not punish them? (i.e. No playing time. Make them pay back the tuition they have received.) No, says the NCAA, let's hammer the innocent. Nice move.

i can't stand the few uab fans. my g/f attends uab, so i've gone to some of their football games while alabama was out of town. i would wear a green shirt but still have a UA hat on. i had quite a few people come over and try to harass me because of my hat even though i was cheering for uab.
