Re: OT Jawuan James Update (9/28)
Disagree with the entire premise that is highlighted in bold... because late last recruiting year, one of the players on our board totally threw the coaches a big curve in their "stated intentions" - and I'm talking about UA coaches.
"Inside information" is just that... someone has a relationship with someone that is close to the situation. Whether that be a relative, friend, business associate, coach, etc., they are privy to information that hasn't/won't be put out in public circles.
And yes... as someone earlier mentioned, we do have several guys on the site that ARE in the know on a lot of things. Not saying any one of them knows all about everything... but they know a lot about certain things.
I completely agree with you Rich in your disagreement with SeattleBama's premise. In fact I started to reply with pretty much the same thing as you did but I figured if he really did believe what he said then he must not follow recruiting very closely so why bother.
I can name a whole lot of times where a coaching staff has been told one thing by a prospect in private only to find out rather quickly that the situation had changed after the situation was made public.
Here are some examples just from the 2009 Signing Class. Not only as I believe you were refering to above, the Greg Reid situation with him telling Bama coaches that he was going to commit to them the night before his announcement only to change at the last minute before his announcement to commit to FSU. Take Urban Meyer and Nu'Keese Richardson when Richardson was told by Kiffin to not tell anyone at his HS or Meyer that he was switching his commitment to UT on NSD. How about Janzen Jackson telling LSU coaches he was firmly committed to them and that he was signing with them on NSD only to surprisingly on NSD postpone his signing at the last minute and then the next day signing with Tennessee.
For some Bama signing examples, Eddie Lacy called the Tennessee coaches the morning of NSD to tell them that he was going to commit to them, then as he was about to announce he decided on Bama literally in the last few minutes before his announcement. Another example is Kenny Bell who was committed to LSU and two days prior to NSD he publically said he was still committed to LSU and he going to sign with them. He shocked Miles and LSU when he signed with Bama of NSD. This sort of thing happens every year, many times. CNS even admitted on NSD that he did not know for sure that Trent Richardson was going to sign with Bama but he thought he would.
The point is that following recruitment is a very fluid and constantly changing situation. It is not an exact science, it is an art of interpretaion of the many facts that you can find out. For example I posted on this board that Star Jackson said that CNS offered him a scholarship and told him he was his #1 choice for QB. That was before Scout.com even had Jackson listed as a Bama QB prospect. I found that out from an interview with Jackson in a South Florida newspaper right after CNS visited Jackson for evaluation. You have to get your information where and when you can. You have to seek out information and base you opinions on valid reports from all sorts of sources, not just what coaches or even what the prospects themselves say. That very often changes quite often.
