UT Stealing our Signals

Did anyone notice that Shula was signaling the plays in to Brodie? And that two players (I'm assuming quarterbacks dressed out with baseball caps on) were standing on the field a few feet in front of Shula to block the signals from the UT sidelines. Did we get some information that Fulmer was stealing signals? Anybody with any information on this? I've never seen this done before. Thanks.

It's not an uncommon thing to have "shields" to prevent signal stealing. It's also very common to have multiple people giving signals so the opposition doesn't know who's sending them in. I wouldn't put it past Phatimmus to try to do that. But hey, if you're lax about that kind of thing, it will come back to haunt you. I always worry about tv cameras being focused on coaches when they're talking to players on the sidelines after a 1st down or a timeout. A good lip reader could pick out plays and send them in to the opposing team's bench. I've seen dozens of times this year where I could read CMSs lips and sometimes I could pick out plays being called.

I noticed Shula giving Guillon the plays and then the other 2 QBs stood in front of him. There is always a risk when signaling in plays. Other teams use numbers on paper and what not, and usually have either tow or three showing, and designate one as the real play. I don't think stealing signs is as big a deal in football as it is in baseball, but props for Shula for preventing the UT coaches from seeing the signal.

No they havent been doing it the way they were Saturday.
That's true. Until this past Saturday Shula gave the play to JPW and Mark and they would both signal different plays in and Brodie new which of them to look at for the "real" play. I am guessing it was done that way because JPW was suspended for the game.

I saw Fulmer covering his mouth a few times on Saturday; but I also saw some ketchup dribbling out of the corner of his mouth at the same time.

I think he just didn't want the cameras to pick up on him shoving a whole hot dog in his mouth at one time during a game . . .

:D

Shula has done this many times before because my father and I have talked about it at length. I can't say for certain that it's an every game thing, but I noticed it a couple of times last year. I've always thought it was a shield to prevent interpretation by the other team....my dad thinks it's to do that AND to put the backup qb in the place of the qb on the field to read the plays so that he'll be prepared.
For what it's worth, on Saturday, we had two qbs on the field and (sometimes) an assistant coach out on the field.

LOL!

Signals

Sometimes teams may have a coach and a QB signaling in plays and only the QB knows which one to watch for. Kind of like the catcher giving the pitcher more than one sign with a baserunner on second. The pitcher knows which is the correct sign based on the innings or outs (number of possibilities).

No...

their calls were so predictable, based on snap count, etc., that it wasn't necessary. As Demeco said "After all, we're college students."
