Video of Les Miles Conducting Big Cat Drill

Here's the LINK.

And I agree about it being a waste. He must be following the RichRod practice schedule if he can afford to spare that much time for 1-on-1 grappling.
Thanks for the link. Interesting , I agree with Mittman a whole lot of standing around going on there. Charlie Strong U of L's new coach, had a red line painted where the the players come on the field, and when they cross it there is NO standing around. When they make a mistake they have to drop prone on the ground , push up , drop back to the ground , repeat 50 times. Now that's a serious practice!

why do people talk about it so much then? i don't get it. what's the big deal?
I think it has more to do with the intended audience than the drill itself. After the last two seasons especially, the LSU fans I know are growing restless with the direction the program's headed. Most point to two deficiencies:

1. Les Miles's questionable decision making (the co-DC kerfluffle, no offensive identity, CLOCK MANAGEMENT, etc.)
2. A perceived lack of toughness (losing leads, players tiring late in the game, and so on)

He can't change #1, so it looks like he's trying to address #2. Unfortunately for him, the toughest team he'll ever field still lost two games, so the influence of #1 will be hard to counter.

Yeah, I cant help but say "So what?". It did look like a lot of standing around. But what is so special about a one on one drill? Many of us did drills that were much harder than that... and that was in HS....20+ years ago. For showing manhood, I preferred 4 on 3. Three OL and a RB, Two DL and a LB, all inside two tackling dummies for boundries. As an OL, there was no hiding when you did or didnt get the job done.

The hat is stupid...

Bull In the Ring. Gauntlet Drills, and Box Drills. I honestly love those. That Big Cat drill is taking up to much time with people standing around.

JMHO. :BigA:

My question, is why tell us to go to another forum, read a thread, and look four posts down...instead of just posting the link on this forum?

This drill is nothing new, and it's certainly nothing scary.

I had an internship with John Skladany the University of Houston defense coach last spring where they did this kind of drill but they broke it up by O line vs D line and LBs vs TEs and backs and WR vs DBs and they had them all going at the same time correcting mistakes while they did it.. U of H has alot better coaching much more organized.. Its only a good drill if done right a waste any ohter way.

Anyone notice Loston getting manhandled by Randle? Early prediction for this year's contest is pointing towards a beating for the purple people. Just keep the play away from Peterson and we should do just fine down there on a Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.
Hmmm... I was thinking Peterson had moved on. I'll check...

I guess it's a big deal because LSU pointed it and said see we are doing something different. I doubt many of those kids don't already know this drill very well.

I corrected it in the next post...
I think #7 is definitely their best player all around but as a group they do not exactly impress. You know they are very talented but seem to be missing a fire inside. I think we have all seen far more vicious hitting in Bama practice footage before and I can attest that the gauntlet at Huffman was much more intimidating than the Big Cat drill.

Frankly, I am too technically-deficient with a computer to know how to post a link like that. I looked for something to type out as a link, and I couldn't find anything. Someone who knows how to post it did so. Thanks to him. Please explain to me how to do it, and I will know how next time. I come from the old black typewriter era, and I never was mechanically inclined.

I started the thread for more than one reason. Les Miles' practices have been characterized by an ex-LSU football player-turned commentator after LSU football games as a lot of standing around. That is exactly what this video shows. The whole team seems to be wasting practice time with the exception of two players.

An LSU supporter on WWL radio remarked after the Alabama game this past season that Alabama manhandled LSU in the second half and marched down the field on them. He said that in answer to some LSU fans' claim that the refs stole the game for Alabama, referring to Peterson's interception of a pass to Julio on the sideline -- which play was nullified by a ref. Ii is obvious that The Hat realizes that Alabama's physicality in that game made LSU look like a bunch of patsies in the second half, and this is Les' way of addressing this situation.

I didn't know Les could holler that loud. About all I have seen him do is to stand on the sideline with a (apparently feigned) confident look on his face -- until he gets that deer-in-the-headlights look at the end of a game when the clock comes into play.
