Virginia's Brad Butler Cheap Shot gets one game suspension (Merged)

Did anyone hear Butler's comments? He said that he wasnt trying to harm Kiwi, he was just trying to block a good player. that is a heaping pyle of BS. Groh is defending Butler through and through. Some Cav fans believe a 1 week suspension is fair. I have lost almost all respect for Groh and UVa, but i'm not sure i ever had respect for them. This entire story is pathetic, The ACC is sticking by UVa on this punishment as well. Classy group that ACC.

As a fan of BC pointed out, the ACC has 4 teams in the top 25, 3 out of the 4 tems are from the former Big East. How bout that.

Yep, I had thought that Al Groh was a better coach than that.

"I've never been one to play outside of the rules," Butler said in the statement. "I was not trying to hurt Mathias Kiwanuka. I was engaged in blocking him because he is the type of player who makes plays all over the field. I regret this event occurred and have put the incident behind me."
BS. The replay clearly shows him setting up and aiming for Kiwanuka's knees after the play was over.

It wasn't a chop block, as Kiwanuka wasn't engage by another player. He was walking away when Butler squared up, set, and launched himself at the back of Kiwanuka's knees.

At the very least, he should have been suspended for the rest of the season. I could almost buy a 3-4 game suspension. But a 1 game suspension, even if it is the FSU game, just doesn't cut it.

You know what is really outrageous

What is really outrageous is the response that this Butler kid is getting from a media that likes to incite (rather than report) and from anonymous dingbats calling him "trash" (among other things) over the internet. One web site even labeled it the 'dirtiest play he'd ever seen'...absurd.

What he did was wrong, he should be suspended. I am both a fan of The University of Virgina and a fan/graduate of The University of Alabama and I was surprised that this young man did this. However, all indications say that this kid is the model student-athlete, courteous, and is involved in all kind of charity work.

When S. Alexander was involved in his contract dispute this year, I heard a caller up in Pennsylvania tell the listening audience, "What a selfish human being...a thug." I couldn't believe it. Bama fans know better.

Since when does "courtesy" entail hitting another player after the play's done, let alone violently, let alone where he's already injured?

UVa may be a good school, but Butler, Groh, and the ACC (of which my institution is a part) have been sullied quite a bit here.

In Groh's weekly call in show he, the host and all the UVa fans defended what Butler did. Said it was legal to do that and dont understand what the fuss is about. They said the play was still going on when he did it. I personally saw a malicious attempt to take out another player. Groh is a disgrace to college athletics, and so is Butler. I understand sticking up for your players but this is a time to discipline them. Groh said that suspension is not the correct term because it is too harsh. He says it is "unneccessary" he plays the game. I personally hope FSU kicks the crap out of Virginia this weekend, as in a BEATDOWN. I have 0 respect for Groh, Butler, and some of their fans. Nor do i have respect for the ACC who are standing by virginia with the weak 1 game suspension.

Anyone else hear of this?

You'll probably get your wish for

a "beatdown" so I guess it'll be a great weekend for you. It sounds like you live in Virgina or close by so I won't add much to what you've said. In a sense, I agree that Groh has lost a lot of respect over the way he's handled the whole situation. He should've let Butler apologize immediately after the game and then suspended him on Sunday.
I'm just curious as to why you have 'no respect for some of their fans.' In my opinion, a large percentage of UVA fans have been very critical of the way this has been handled....especially when you compare the way our biggest rivals circle the wagons when Frank "Phil Fulmer wannabe" Beamer overlooks the innumerable embarrassments at VA Tech.
