Ian Rapoport: Want to talk about the WildRebel formation? Nick Saban goes old school...

I wanted to discuss the WildRebel formation. Ya know, the one with a running back or receiver in shotgun, like coach Houston Nutt used at Arkansas with Darren McFadden and now uses at Ole Miss with Dexter McCluster.

I started by trying to get my bearings: Isn't the WildRebel similar to the single wing from 50 years ago?

And what I received from Alabama coach Nick Saban was a history lesson. A lighthearted, informative, tremendous history lesson. Saban took me waaaaaay back, proving once again that you never know what you're going to get when you ask him anything.

"You know, the first year I played Pop Warner football, my dad was the coach," Saban said. "We went and picked up all the players on the bus, and I still remember all the sayings on the wall of the bus. And our offense was the single wing."

Yup, this was going to be a good one...
Saban talks football.

I love Coach Saban and his tirades, but man, I can't stand Rappaport. I cringe when I listen to him during the press conferences. He can hardly get a sentence out with out saying "um..." 30 times, and I don't like how he seemingly purposefully refers to Coach Saban as "Nick." It kinda seems like he rubs Coach the wrong way quite a bit too. More often than not, the responses to his questions are in an almost agitated tone, and understandably so.

"One of these days," he warned, "when old the guys like me don't coach anymore, and the young bucks who grew up defending four-wides and everything, somebody's going to run the wishbone, and they may not know a thing about how to stop it."
lol won't that be something .. i could see that happening somewhat .. well there's video evidence now though.

Seems to me that the two of them are actually starting to develop a relationship. Maybe the guy asks stupid questions or whatever, but it seems like Saban enjoys busting his chops. Maybe that's his way of showing his affection.

Or maybe not.

Well, Coach is always interested in helping young people be successful, to become the best they can be. That's probably why he keeps busting Ian's chops for those stupid questions. He's trying to help him become a better sportswriter.

In the way that the biggest kid on the block will sometimes 'adopt' the weird geek as a friend in a show of sympathy...

Is it just me or does anyone else get all warm and fuzzy feelin when CNS talks football strategy?
It reminds me of opening a big Christmas package as a child.

I felt watching it like I was at a coaching clinic.

I liked at the end when he suggested Saban use the option, Saban stuck his head back in the door and said, "When you get to be a head coach, you can do whatever the h___ you want.":D
