Was Bill Curry fired, or did he "resign"?

Yeah, I came of age as a Bama fan during the Curry era, especially during the '89 season, so I don't really remember too much of the side stuff that went on. I know we went 9-3 in '88, but wasn't that in spite of losing both Jelks and Humphrey to injury? Kinda makes me wonder what kind of year we would have had if those guys don't get hurt. Then, of course, the big year in '89 until the Auburn game. I guess it worked out as Bama and Coach Stallings embarked on an outstanding run, and Curry never really panned out at Kentucky.

Yeah...

and you'd think there'd be pix in the newspapers of the siege machine that flung the magic brick that gave Curry something to complain about for the next 15 years or so. He probably still mourns the fact that the damned hurricane didn't really hit Texas hard...

i too was in school when Curry resigned. Funny how rumors spread. At the time, I thought the alleged brick was thrown through a window at his home (home office). I also recall looking through the News and the CW and finding no stories. Call me crazy, but I kinda liked Curry (less the Auburn record of course!)

...of course Curry did run a lot of option plays with Tim Couch during his tenure with the Cats. On second thought, maybe I didn't like Curry as much as I first thought!

I don't follow you. Just because he was tutored by Bobby Dodd does not make him a good X's and O's coach. There is no need to even mention him being a great one or even above average for that matter.

.

I agree. But note the fact that Bobby Dodd felt the need to be a mentor. I think that says a load. I remember when Curry was hired I had a conversation with a Georgia Tech friend. I told him to not feel bad about Joab taking his coach - that he got the better of the deal with Bobby Ross. He has reminded me of that over the years.

I also agree with Bamablood6 that the smartest thing Curry did was bring in Homer Smith. The man had few peers as an OC. I felt his great talent was taking available talent and designing his offense around their strengths. Doesn't he still live in T-town today? Did Homer Smith ever match offensive wits against SOS?

Concerning Curry being lax on discipline, that may be the one thing he learned from Dodd. Bryant always said that Dodd was one of the best game day coaches but he couldn't understand how he could be so unstructured through the week of preparation. Tech players were living off campus while Bryant Hall was in full glory. I also heard stories of the players sometimes playing volleyball during practice. It sounds so rediculous that it might be true. BTW, Bryant and Dodd were good friends and visited each others homes.

It really was true...

A boyhood friend, Bob Solomon, who graduated with me signed with Tech as an end (both ways, remember?). He was a straight-A engineering student. He told me that they played volleyball and flag FB during the week. He said that practices were much tougher at Decatur High, under Coach Shorty Ogle...

had fewer problems with him than a lot of my age bracket. He always seemed to me to be posing for the best cameral angle, and I knew some things going on at the grassroots level in the team that indicated to me that he really had his head in the clouds. His departure, however, left a lasting bad taste - the brick fairy tale, fear for his life, all that BS...

I agree completely. Curry was the penultimate Narcissist. If you re-read some of his comments to the media, about 80% of them are paraphrases of "I am all this, all that and a bag of Golden Flake." The other 20% are paraphrases of "it's as bad as I think it is, and yes they are out to get me."

I remember reading a story from one of his former players about a motivational tactic Curry tried just before an important game (Auburn, 89?). He gave each player a cassette copy of Bette Midler's "Wind beneath my wings." The players were bewildered--here they are about to go out and try to knock the slobber out of an opposing team, and their head coach wants them to be inspired by a cheesy song from a cheesy movie. And then he asked for the cassettes back.

Oh and, when I saw him prancing around the sidelines in that sweater, I thought he looked ghey.

First of all, there were pictures of the now infamous window being broken and it was ALL over the news. I am shocked that most don't remember that! If in fact it was Curry's window, I am not sure, but there were pictures of the window being broken.

When he was at Tech he left for Bama and 2 years later they share the NC. The same thing happened at Bama when he left for Kentucky.(We didn't share it) The Cats were extremly happy to "steal away a Bama coach". He loved to talk on his radio show and took very few calls. As time went on he got Tim Couch to attend Ky. but had an veer offense in and when he had to make a QB change to Couch he kept in the veer. Folks were going nuts! Press was also. Today you cannot talk about him with the diehard cat fans.

I think you've missed the point of some of the posts here Alan. It wasn't whether or not a window was broken, but whether or not it was broken in the manner in which you'll find it being described.

It is easy to understand the physical improbability that someone threw a brick from the grounds outside the Athletic building, two stories high and then broke out a tempered glass pane as thick as the ones installed in that building were. So, this notion about some fan walking by the building and tossing a brick through the window are just BS. I dare say a body builder who is Olympic caliber in shot put could get enough velocity on a brick to break one of those windows unless he was standing directly in front of it; eye level.

I've heard, as have a few others that have posted here (I know Jess has also), players who have said it's their feeling that Curry himself broke a window in the building. In fact, I've had one account told to me by a University/ Athletic staff member at that time that there wasn't any glass fragments found inside of the office.

Basic physics there...

I thought he resigned cause he could never get his players to be "focused". :biggrin2:

That's right. They weren't "focused," and he warned them that he "wouldn't tolerate that."

(Of course, according to some of the other posts I'm seeing on this thread, there was lots of stuff he did "tolerate" that he shouldn't have.)

TBF. was paranoid. Incoming hurricanes, FBI for mystery threats at AU AG, ghostly bricks. Does a pattern start to form for anyone? Has it ever occurred to him that, perhaps, not that many people care about him - particularly not the weather gods?

On the hurricane - the football managers and equipment was in Texas already. We had gone up to Huntsville (Texas) because of the possibility of the storm coming into the Houston area (we lived about halfway between Houston and Galveston). We got up that Friday morning and, watching the news, it was clear the storm was going south so we decided to head back. We went into the restaurant to get breakfast, and there were several Alabama Troopers there. I wandered out front and the managers were there, lining up the players rooms, and the front lot was full of Alabama equipment trucks. Shortly after that, Curry pulled the plug.

The ESPN interview with Jackie in the Kyle Field press box the next day was pretty funny, what with a clear blue sky and all.
