Link: Wednesday Thoughts On OL Room

Bumping this thread.

Now that Kap is gone, we're all waiting for a big announcement. (I'm excited!)
Yep, I'm pumped at getting a new OL coach and possibly, just possibly a staff thats going to tweak their philosophy just enough to allow more of a physical, downhill running game.

In addition to the OL issues I'd like to see our back play harder. They seem to think the other guys have a right to tackle them if they approach them. They need to run angry, and don't ever underestimate how big it is to always fall forward when you do go down. That transfers the energy loss to the other guy and over 60 minutes it absolutely matter.

They need to turn on the tape of Indiana's backs. Those two guys ran with viciousness every play and without hesitation. Regardless of what the OL did, they ran their butts off.

Chicken - egg. The Hoosiers RBs had a lot of confidence the hole which was supposed to be there ... would be there.

Their OL took their job seriously and ... opened the holes for the RBs.

After reading a lot of online opinions, I'm feeling good if we hire the Klemm guy. Yes, his resume is a little odd but the more you research it it wasn't due to performance of the OL. He had a bout of health issues and philosophy differences with an OC at Pittsburgh.
Got to have the second guy as a contingency. Klemm has a history of being a bad fit and of missing times for medical reasons. Need someone there everyday in case it happens again.

It's really exciting that we have some positives to discuss again. New coaching, new vision, new players etc.

As bad as it was this year, it's almost inevitable we stand to make some improvements...hopefully our OL play can go from bad to good/average OR maybe even above average/very good!

Im asking around, but I want know how involved Grubb is with the Oline as it relates to his offense. During the season he was asked a question about what was he going to do to try to get the running game going. His answer caught my attention and Ive admittedly have been fixated on it ever since. He said "Ive done all I can do." That answer bothered me, because he didnt explain what he meant by that. So i started filling in the blanks myself with all kind of things he could have meant.

After watching Grubb for a year and seeing what he does. Theres just something in his "game" that doesn't give me confidence. But, if the new OL coach can fix the run blocking those concerns may be irrelevant.

Will we ever know about the drama with Grubb and Roberts?

There is some reason for optimism. I’m still amazed that we did as well as we did this year with the OL/running game issues we had. IF we can get that fixed, we may be in business.

Yes, as absolutely horrid as we looked at times, we did manage to win 11 games. We beat some pretty solid teams to get those 11 wins. I hope DeBoer can find a way to deliver more consistency and more physicality. We should never look incompetent or soft, and we looked both a few times this year.

I'm going to hold judgement until Bama a) hires the guy( if he is the choice) and b) see how he does..............I still think there are better choices, but if they were to hire him and the guy from Mizzou i'd have few reservations

Man, I have no idea what happened there. I know in the early stages he was injured but then after he healed up and STILL didnt get in? That stumped me.
I’m convinced that the players were not the issue with the OL.

You can have a good college OL without a single NFL-quality player. We had probably three or four future NFL players on that line.

Last I heard Proctor was still projected as a first-round pick. Brailsford declared early, so he must have reason to believe he will at least be drafted. Formby was picked up quickly from the portal. If he was as bad as we thought, he would have been abandoned in the portal. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the NFL. Carrol was only lacking in experience. He certainly looks to be a future NFL player. And it appears that Roberts was better than some of the guys on the field but was underused.

I'm excited that Klemm has recent run game coordinator experience. I think both DeBoer and Grubb could benefit from that being implemented into the offense they've typically run for now and their futures. Again, positive improvement running pretty much everywhere he's gone.

I think Mama needs to call Vlachos home from Miami as an O Line coach in addition to the main guy. Have seen someone post this and makes a lot of sense to me. William over achieved at Center for Bama and his coaching career seems to echo that sentiment. That kid bleeds Crimson.

Thanks for posting this. While I do NOT agree with Jimmy, that Kap did a good job, Clint's very thorough review of Klemm's record makes me agree with Jimmy that Klemm would be a significant upgrade.
There are aspects of what they said that I agree with, but ,IMO, Jimmy goes off the reservation trying to evenly spread the blame to everyone. I disagree with that. If I had to weight it, I would say 70-75% of the run game problems was the OL.
