What % do you think obesity contributes to the health problems in our country? (ETA - and why is rucking the best answer? :) ) Part II

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I use the run for two reasons:
1- I can't really run with my bad knee, and
2- runs are one of the 'big three' on Strava, meaning you get all the data vs only some of the data you get from any exercise not running, cycling, or swimming

I've heard rumors for years they were going to add a ruck category, but at this point I'll just stick with calling them runs, knowing full well I'm burning more kcals than it reports.
I took the Run activity and customized it, naming it Rucking. I then added Run again for my runs. I track altitude change for Rucking, but not for my runs. But Rucking is less than 20% of my annual mileage right now.

Gary Brecka on Rogan from November is worth a listen. I can't link it because, Rogan. He's talking about how many/most of our health problems are really nutrition deficiencies. His background is that he worked for a life insurance company looking at health records and helping decide if large policies should be issued. He kept seeing the same patterns over and over. He wasn't allowed to just reach out and tell people what was actually wrong with them. The doctors are looking at the trees, he was looking at the forest. He swapped over to working for health. I'm pretty sure I have some of the methylation issues he mentions and am going to get that tested.

Ditto his appearance on the Shawn Ryan Show. Language, but some pretty interesting stuff.

I'm fairly certain much of our problem lies with the automobile.

Hear me out on this:
1. While driving, we barely move for long periods of time while sitting on your largest muscle group with your back overly supported.
2. We're often stressed with no real outlet while driving.
3. The air in cars is filled with chemicals from seats and plastics.
4. We've replaced walking and standing with driving, not burning about 200 to 300 calories a day that typically aren't burned some other way by most people. Fat is roughly 3500 calories per lb, so after about 12 days, we've could have gained a pound vs. walking.
5. We don't really sweat in cars anymore, so none of the toxins get out of our skin through sweat.
6. Drivers get cancer at much higher rates than cyclists and walkers.

Now processed foods with hundreds of chemicals are bad, but the automobile just adds to the problem.

Same with office work. It may have been on Huberman or Art of Manliness, but almost a year ago I heard a good podcast on NEAT. Non Exercise Activity Thermogenics. It's how we burn calories doing other stuff. It led me to change to an adjustable stand up desk and office treadmill. When I have conference calls now, I'm walking. I just have to make sure I'm not going so fast that I sound breathless.

Agreed - and 30 minutes on the treadmill isn't enough to counter it. We're built to move a LOT, and we (generally speaking) seek comfort all the time now rather than pushing ourselves to move.

Finding the time to move more can be simple or complex, depending on one's lifestyle, but you will always find / make time for things that are truly important to you.

Had some rough flu-like stuff about three weeks ago, lasted for a good four days, cough/breathing issues for proabbly two weeks - but I still have a 277 day workout streak intact. Really should be about 600, but I took a day off last May due to travel and sickness, so...

I figure if I can push through it, I should. Maybe it will kill me, maybe it will make me tougher to kill - I'm counting on the latter... :)

don't know how you did it. I had the flu and couldn't walk to my car without coughing nonstop for 20 minutes.

My gatorade these days is watered down. I mix about 30% gatorade and 70% water.
I just drink water - the need for electrolytes is largely overblown for a vast majority of people. If you're sweating all day long, sure, but for the typical 30-60 minute workout there's no need if you eat a decent diet.
