What % do you think obesity contributes to the health problems in our country? (ETA - and why is rucking the best answer? :) ) Part II

How's everyone doing on their fitness goals for 2024?

As many of y'all know I've been living with a non-surgically repairable torn meniscus since Feb 2019, so I'm somewhat limited in my rucking - I can go neither really fast (running) nor really heavy, or my knee swells badly and I limp around for a bit. So despite averaging just over 2k ruck miles per year for the last six years, I decided in late 2023 that for this year I was going to only do 30 miles/week and supplement with heavier calisthenics and weightlifting.

Fast forward to August and I decided I wasn't getting enough miles in, so I reset my goal to 2,024 miles in 2024. That meant that since I was just ahead of pace for the year for the goal of 1,560 miles (52 weeks x 30 miles per week), I needed to add roughly 100 miles per month to my total.

As of today I'm almost back on pace for my updated goal - should be ahead of pace before December, just have to average 6.5 miles/day for the rest of the year.

Feeling good, knee is holding up well (no running and I'm only carrying 25# right now).

How are y'all doing?
After listening to several Huberman and Jocko podcasts in late spring, I decided that I had to make a change. Since then, I do a cold water plunge 2-3x a week and lift weights 2-3x a week. I mix in run/walks fairly consistently. I'm starting to look different and hopefully on my way to being out of what I'm sure is insulin resistance.

That's awesome!

If you follow Jocko on social media, he posts a picture of his watch every AM - always around 4:30 - because "discipline equals freedom". If you haven't you should read his books - he's really good at taking leadership and discipline lessons and making them accessible than "here's what we did in the SEALs".

I should read his books. I mainly listen to his interviews with the guys from SOG, Dick Thompson in particular. I've read 3 of Thompson's books.

PS, congrats on being able to up your mileage. I need to do mine. I really want to do another Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim. My daughter will have to have her other hip operated on before we can do that though.

I had to ease up on the mileage after 2 monster years, but my overall fitness and physique have actually improved. No goals this year other than get in some work EVERY DAY.

Discipline is my friend.

Surpassed the pace for my updated annual goal this past weekend, so I *should* finish about 50 miles above pace for the year. Not the slam-dunk on the goal I normally have but considering I reset my goal (by an additional 500 miles) in August, I'm pleased with my progress. Barring injury this will be my fifth consecutive year of rucking >2,000 miles.

Don't let the holidays sidetrack you - keep up the good work. If you're out of the habit of doing the work, start today! You don't have to kill yourself, lift impressive weights, run (or preferably ruck) impressive distances - just get to moving, a little bit more each day.

Excellent article about how movement is the key to living longer. After almost a year of regular workouts, walking , etc., I can attest to that.

@Padreruf, thank you for that article.

Here is a statement from the article which I think is important.
…Take a moment to let that sink in: how much and how vigorously you move are more important than how old you are as a predictor of the years you’ve got left.

… on a lighter note, if movement is the key, this guy must have lived to 150. 😊
