What if the Big Ten isn't all that and a bag of chips this year?

And some media bozo will point out the Big Ten record as superior without acknowledging the mathematical reality that the conference takes a loss when when 4 of their conference teams play each other.

UGA / Ole Miss too...its just ridiculous

I expected to get beat up a little bit about the BIG record and for the reasons stated. The SEC lost two more last night. The playoffs last year seem to say the SEC is not as dominate as its recent past. Hopefully that is an anomaly created by the new system, and adjustments will be made. I think Alabama will be Indiana because of the intangibles.

Lost two more....lol....Mizzou ended the game with a walk-on QB and LSU played the entire game with their backup QB...both lost by less than a TD....this is why bowl records outside of the CFP are stupid to use as indicators of conference strength....and if you recall, or don't for convenience, last year UGA lost Beck in the SECCG...so had to play with Stockton, who hadn't played all year. SEC teams were nicked up in the CFP last year....this year there are SEC only CFP games so those are automatic losses for one SEC team...but that isn't included in the narrative is it....

And both teams, Missouri and LSU, were playing teams ranked higher than them, so they were technically supposed to lose those games.

UVA finished first in the ACC. Mizzou finished eighth in the SEC.

Yes, but doesn't that kind of put the lie to that old canard about "the 8th best team in the SEC would win the ACC conference easily"?

I understand things have changed and the reality is that COACHES going back to the 1960s never wanted bowl games to count for national title balloting simply because - as Sparty coach Duffy Daugherty noted (and I'm paraphrasing what he said) - "You're hitting on all cylinders as a team, you're in a groove - and then you take six weeks away from the game, take finals, go across the country and you wind up facing a team that has far less to lose than you do and can be more relaxed in their approach."

The usage of bowl games to denote conference strength probably died around the time UCF routed Auburn in 2017 if not before.

No, that officially died in the year 2000 when the number of bowl teams ballooned to 50 and a bowl game - any bowl game - stopped being something special because it was no longer a difficult goal to attain and no longer guaranteed a quality team facing another quality team.

At this point, we'd be better off moving bowl games to the spring to schedule them around spring breaks and try to generate hype for the upcoming season...

What is the excuse for Tennessee losing to Illinois? Discounting the Alabama vs Oklahoma game the only SEC win is a mismatch Ole Miss beating Tulane losing four. The BIG is six and one. Based on the bowl games Indiana will boat race Alabama. I hope our best teams are as good as their best teams.

I hope Alabama is better than Indiana…and I think you sleep standing up.

Does anyone know what the numbers are with regards to portal losses by team and by conference?

I’ve seen it with Ole Miss, Indiana, Texas Tech, FSU and I’m sure there are others. Vanderbilt, maybe What’s the point of recruiting talent and developing it just so we can go play somewhere else?

I’m trying to make sense of where college football is going

I have not found a rundown, Only thing I know is go to the portal site and use the drop down menu to check individual teams. I think barney has like 28?

Not sure if the thread title aged well. The B1G is taking care of its business. A little closer look though, shows games vs G5, back up QBs and teams with key players missing. But you can only play the team in front of you...and they are winning those...

Vandy had zero opt outs and they are getting dominated by an average Iowa team.

I think they had a bunch of dudes opt out quit the team.
