I'm sure those of us on facebook know by now that a lot of people use it as a platform to express their beliefs, be it political, religious, etc. I viewed (chose not to get involved) a thread regarding being "open minded". It was basically this guy who appeared to be out in California calling several people involved in the thread (from the South) closed and narrow minded people. I watched the debates go back and forth.

As I was viewing I couldn't help but wonder if this guy (from Cali) simply labeled someone narrow minded or closed minded because they didn't believe what he believed. That thought process quickly lead me to basically two questions that I'll pose the board this Monday morning.

1. Does being "open minded" mean you have to accept or tolerate everything?

1a. Can someone be open minded yet simply have some form of a filtering process to consider something THEN decide they don't believe it or in it, and still be open minded?

Discuss my sheople.

I'd go a step further than 1a and say someone is truly open-minded when not only can they listen to other's views, but can also look at their own views and see both their strengths and their shortcomings. It's sort of like loving someone. Being able to really see the person for their character flaws and strengths and still choosing them because they fit you best.

Open Minded - The act of being liberal and not a stupid, toothless, hillbilly, redneck conservative.

Agreed. But wouldn't you say option 1 is the definition of being open minded in today's society?
I suppose those who don't have the self confidence or moral compass to stand for what they believe in probably feel that way, but most folks I know (even the liberals whom this definition most commonly fits) lean more towards 1a.

I think this is what happens:
- Stupid person holds to a dumb idea by being closed-minded.
- Outsider sees this and makes the connection between said idea and being closed-minded.
- The assumption then becomes anyone who shares that idea is closed-minded.

Ideas are not closed-minded. People are.

I can believe that everything is okay and everyone is great and be closed-minded. I can believe that any and all sexual activity outside of marriage is wrong, yet still be open-minded.

Anyone with any stance who cannot consider another viewpoint is being closed-minded. Anyone who is open to and considers other viewpoints is being open-minded. Regardless of what the viewpoints are.

I look at the reaction Mr. Cathy from Chick Fil A got for simply stating his belief regarding marriage. The outrage and labels the man got was nuts. Did he refuse to serve gays? Nope. Did he refuse to hire gays? Nope. He simply stated his belief and since it didn't all in line with a large group of people he was labeled narrow minded.
