What "surprise" commits are we likely to end up with?

Who's gonna sneak up on us this year? I know, I know, if it's a "surprise" commit, how can anyone know, right? Best guesses, gut feelings, intuition, crystal ball, Tarot Cards.............

If I had to pick one, and it's probably more wishful thinking than anything, I would say the Arthur Brown. I know he likes Bama but it would shock me if we pulled him from the midwest.

From his comments and the comments of those in his "entourage" I think we have a good shot with AB and better than most people think.

AB would definitely be a big surprise and coup by the staff to get him out of Big 12 territory. Another big coup would be to get Whitlock away from Carolina.

AB would be unexpected, but not so much that I'd classify it as a real surprise.

I'll go with something "off the wall", but maybe not so far fetched.

(1) Tommy Tuberville goes to TAMU to replace Franphony.

(2) Having fulfilled a lifetime goal (playing Bama), Bobby Bowden announces he's retiring effective after the Florida game (timing gives new HC Jimbo Fisher time to minimize the recruiting fallout).

(3) With both his 1st and 2nd choices out of HS going thru coaching transitions, Enrique Davis contacts CNS about playing at Bama.

It's a double-whammy for the goobers. Not only do they lose their prize recruit, they lose him to their biggest rival.

With how few spots we have left, and how many outstanding prospects are left on the board, I don't think any of the remaining spots would be a big surprise. Those last 6 to 8 spots will be filled by a list of 10 to 20 guys that were all listed in RTO's latest recruiting update.

Some of those guys (Arthur Brown) might be considered upsets, but I don't think any would be surprises.

I don't know of any surprise commitments, if I did they wouldn't be a surprise. I still remember the surprise commitment from Javier Arenas. Hopefully Bama can come up with one like that between now and NSD.

I'd consider Bryant or Art Brown a surprise. However, I really expect to get one of these cornerbacks that we supposedly aren't getting. And Arthur Brown seems like a big possibility. Coach Saban is known to be absolutely relentless as a recruiter, and he'd probably get a starting job next season whereas he most likely would not next season with OU.

I think the reason he is soooo unreadable is because he's truly considering going to Bama. You hear a lot of little hints and people around Julio saying he's going to Bama, I personally haven't seen a lot of that with AB and OU.

As in A Brown I have a feeling OU has the advantage, and I would be pleasantly surprised if we could pull him.I would love to see a huge surprise at DT.

In a dream world
Both Rivals and Scout has him as a 8*

He also has a gpa of 10 so he has no use for those textbooks and the textbook buyers that are lurking on every street corner , is a mind-reader(which is good when it comes to knowing what the opposing team is gonna do next), and has a little blackberry that has hundreds of hotchicks numbers which he is gonna share with those of us who are still in the game.

A surprise commitment is someone that seemingly comes out of nowhere and you have not heard much of anything about them until they commit.

Melvin Ray was not a surprise. He he attended camp at Alabama, and had shown interest. He had not mentioned Bama among his favorites prior to commiting so it took some people by surprise.

Burton Scott was definitely not a surprise. He was leaning toward Bama prior to committing.

Arthur Brown definitely would not be a surprise. He has officially visited Alabama and he was very impressed and had a great time. Brown has spoken very well of UA and he has them listed among his favorites. His mentor and trainer Bryan Butler also spoke very well of Alabama after he accompanied Brown and his family on their official visit to Alabama. Bultler said he thought Alabama would be a big factor in Brown's decision on which school to attend. The only school of Brown's five official visits that he will have visited twice is Alabama. He has officially visited Alabama, North Carolina, and LSU and he has plans to officially visit USC and Miami. Alabama has a really good shot at landing AB. He will announce his commitment on Dec. 17th.

well i had never heard anything of Melvin Ray before he commited.. nothing at all..

BJ Scott on the other hand I had known a lot about but NEVER knew we were even in his favorites.. and before he commited i had no idea he was leaning to us ..from all I gathered i thought he was UF's to lose.... and I never thought he would have commited so EARLY!

lol guess i just need to follow recruiting a little closer! if thats possible....

I'm with you on that. Not dissing Surf int he least, but I'm usually surprised, even with "expected" commits. Int he timing, if nothing else. I also knew nothing about Ray (but was quickly educated), and also thought Scott was leaning elsewhere at one point. Saban and staff, and the guys working this forum, have me spoiled! I let them keep up with it, and I'll be the dufus that goes "Wow, I didn't know Barrett Jones would commit today, and D.J. Fluker, who saw that coming?"... I'm sure every one saw that coming!

All joking aside, any more 2009 commits would be nice surprises.
