What was with the bells on third down?

The band used Phantom of the Opera into Thunderstruck as the 3rd down cheer for the first 3 games, and marketing came up with the bells... Surprisingly enough, I think it's awesome. The stadium really responded to it!

I thought it helped get the crowd a little more fired up for 3rd down. I know we shouldn't need it, but count me in the "thumbs up" category.

I liked the bells. It signified that we were coming for them...

I also liked the bells. Sort of like Pavlovian Conditioning, once people realize that the bells mean 3rd down, they will get louder when they hear the bells even if their minds are drifting from the games. Most of us on this board won't need that reminder, but I think it will help some of our slightly less dedicated fans.

I hated the painted up elephant on the other hand! It looked like a circus elephant. I like to think of fierce elephants when I think of the Tide, not an elephant about to stand on a tiny podium or do a little dance. I thought it was terrible.

I believe that we might have copied that one form somebody else. I am not sure where the bells for third down started, but North Carolina does it too. I went to some of the games @ Chapel Hill last year, and that is tradition there.
The one tradition that I pray we never do is the first down thing that West Virginia does. Every time they get a first down the fans do this strange who who who and point like a ref with the first down signal. That one is silly in my opinion. But I always did like the bells on third down @ Carolina.

I like the old elephant roar. I don't know anything about this song by AC/DC. Being from Mobile, it sounded to me like the tugboat whistles you hear late at night in Mobile Bay coming into the river. Now that you mention it, it did sound a little like Denny chimes. I don't see how this helps get us fired up, but to each his own.

I think Oklahoma State does that too. Several years ago, I went to the Alamo Bowl when they played there and there fans did something like that. Very strange...

It was more of a gong to me. It was freakin awesome. The crowd went wild and looking at their stats on 3rd downs, the gong and the crowd did their job. I also liked the " first down Alabama",then the crowd says "Roll Tide",pretty awesome as well. I had a great time at the game. The only thing that made me  was seeing "fans" get up at the end of the 3rd quarter to leave. Why even go, if you're going to leave before it is even over, let me have your ticket and I will support my Tide!
