Ironically, the Bama OC is the reason they are not playing USC instead of WVU. The Atlanta Sports Council had a tentative agreement with USC to play in either the 2013 or 2014 games. Their choice. The USC preferred opponent was Bama. When GT asked out of the scheduled 2013-14 H/H with Bama , that opened up both years for discussion with the ASC.
Although the agreement was for either 2013 or 2014, USC was already scheduled to open at Hawaii in 2013, therefore 2014 almost assuredly would have been the year chosen by USC. When Kiffin became HC at USC, he said thanks, but no thanks. Bama wound up being contracted for both years. To my knowledge, Bama had very little, if any, say in who their opponents would be because at that late date it was probably just a matter of whoever the ASC could get.
