When will the NCAA change its Draft Rules?

The NCAA has got to change its rules concerning players that declare for the draft but do not hire an agent. Can someone explain what the downside is to not hiring an agent.

If a guy doesn't hire an agent and goes undrafted, can he come back to school without any penalty?

Does he have to apply for reinstatement by the NCAA?

Why doesn't every player declare and not hire an agent?

I understand that by not hiring an agent they take the chance of being drafted and not being able to sign a big contract, or have someone out there campaigning for them. It just seems like there has been an increase recently with players declaring without the agent.

The NCAA needs to change their rules, or make it tougher to get back in school, or something...

It's an amateur status thing with hiring an agent. Agents probably pay an advance or something as part of getting hired.

BB players can declare for the draft and come back once according the last changes I saw a couple years ago.

They don't have to apply for reinstatement. If they don't have an agent, then they never become ineligible. The reasons all don't do it are several. Despite what they say in public, no coach likes having a player declare and the overwhelming majority of those who declare sans agent are not drafted. Then they have to go back and face the coach. Also, the very top echelon of players may not benefit that much from having an agent, in terms of where they are drafted. For everyone else, the agents actually provide a valuable service for their clients in terms of networking, providing info on the player to prospective teams and advising the players as to what they need to do physically to enhance their draft status...

I don't doubt that is true, but there is no way CMG would have held a grudge against Winston, Grizzard, Wallace, or Williams had they come back after the draft. If a guy like Gee were to try the draft I could see a coach holding a grudge, but certainly not for a "star" player on their team...

Brandon Bass at LSU fell into that trap a few years back where he declared, came back and then when he did after his JR year he was stuck even though he fell to the second round. I think after your JR year a player should declare, like Davidson did last year. It gives the player a chance to talk to NBA teams and find what they think of him, and what he needs to work on. It also helps raise his profile heading into his SR year. I don't really see anything wrong with it.

No, you are mistaken. If you read the article you linked it mentions nothing about him removing himself from the draft. He did decide to return for his senior year but not after entering the draft. Since he entered the draft the previous year (http://www.nbadraft.net/2005earlyentry.asp), entering again would have cost him his senior year regardless of signing with an agent or going undrafted.
