Re: Which 2012 Bama signees play versus Michigan?

am i missign something...were all the recruits from last years class total flops, or will the possibly get the nod to start, since they have a year inthe program.

these guys are talented, for sure...but so was last years class.

I can see the JUCO's playing, as well as some on special teams and maybe some mop up duty for experience....but i think we have a lot of players with a seson under their belt that are going to be working into the starting rotation. I.E. HaHa at Safety this year.

Maybe the kicker....and possibly Yeldon...but i would think if Hart comes in and performs well in the spring and fall, it will be a two man rotation, with a little fowler thrown in for bruises...no need to burn a redshirt when you have plenty of talent with experience.

I.E. HaHa at Safety this year.

I'm leaning towards any of the ones that enrolled early and maybe Griffith.
I agree with this line of thinking. Dixon, Belue, Yeldon, Anderson, Cooper and Black among the EE's plus Landon, Eddie Williams and Cyrus Jones (possibly). Lake and Taylor at the NT may end up playing due to a lack of the depth at NT.

I think you are missing something. Typically Saban has let 8-10 freshman play out of each class with most starting on special teams. Depriest, Sunseri, HaHa all started on special teams, Jessie Williams started on "D". In these times especially with very talented players you play them early and often and hope they stick around more than three years.

I think with most players they try to use a redshirt year unless that player demonstrates that he is ready to play immediately. However, there are some guys who the coaching staff recognize as being probably three year players. In those cases, Coach Saban seems to like to get them on the field in some capacity as freshmen, whether it is special teams or as a backup or even in mop-up duty. The reason seems to be that those players get playing time as true freshmen and give two years of starting service before moving on to the NFL, much like we saw with Dre Kirkpatrick and Trent Richardson. I think Barron would have been another example of this last year if he had not been injured, which seemed to cause him to come back for his senior campaign. I wouldn't be surprised to see Clinton-Dix start the next two years and head to the NFL after his junior year. Anyway, the process is not only working, it is amazing me to the point that I can't believe how fortunate I am to be a Bama fan right now.

It was Kent State, but still, the following true Freshmen played last year against Kent State in the opener according to the TideSports participation chart.
Hasean Clinton-Dix
Trey Depriest
Xzavier Dickson
Adrian Hubbard
Christion Jones
Cyrus Kouandjio
Jeoffery Pagan
Vinnie Sunseri

8 played last year in our opener. A few of those were early enrollees. So, I agree. It's certainly not unreasonable to expect 8-10 freshmen play. I expect a closer game from Michigan which might result in fewer true freshmen playing, though.

Everyone has already listed most of the favorites, rightfully so. We're wise to remember however that our evaluations and the recruiting service evaluations aren't anything like Coach Saban and staff's evaluations. Thus every year we get what we had this past year where Christian Jones who was something of an afterthought to many in the 11 recruiting class and Vinnie Sunseri who seemed a tweener with a dad on staff were relatively overlooked. However they figured as prominently as any freshman on the team this year, especially Vinnie and how big were Christian's sure hands in January! There are obviously other glaring examples of this in years past, 3 star Dareus comes to mind immediately.

One thing is for sure. At Bama the best players play, even if they're a walk-on!

Can you imagine Ryan Anderson blowing up someone on kick coverage? Ouch!

Pretty sure Hubbard was a RS Freshman. I could be wrong, though.

If you're considering special teams contribution, I think up to a dozen will play. It's hard to guess exactly who will be in that group but that seems to be the norm under Saban. Collins is a sure thing I think. He's going to be in the safety rotation and certainly warrant going ahead with him on special teams from game 1.

special teams i can see, but not starting freshmen at key positions when we have talented players ahead of them that now 1-2 years in the program...unless those guys, such as dee hart HAHA, etc from the past two classes are now not expected to contribute...

Jesse williams, was a JUCO, which we've already dsicussed is completely different that a true freshman signee. Both the JUCO players should see significabnt playign time, with one being a starter, and the other more than likely being the nickel back.

so guess i may be percieving this as breakign into the 'starting rotation' versus some mop up duty for experience. Michigan may not be that mop up opportunity that kent state was last season, though.

Lets just pause and reflect on this conversation for a minute. 5 years ago had we been talking about this game, we would be hoping we could hang in there with meechigan. They were one game away from the title, and we were pre Saban. Now Sabans unprecedented success in recruiting has us talking about which of our true freshman from a number 1 class will get to play over redshirt freshman from a number 1 class and so on with upperclassmen. It truly is amazing, and something we all likely take for granted.

I see Deon Belue starting at either KR, PR, or both.
I see either Eddie Williams or Amari Cooper starting at reciever.
I see Travell Dixon starting in the exact same role that Menzie left.

I think there will be some fierce competition for the vacant safety spot between Haha and Landon Collins, as well.

I think not enrolling early will hurt EW chances of starting, I don't think any new WRs will start but they will get playing time.

Amari Cooper will likely prove you wrong. :) A lot of the WR learning curve is being able to run routes properly. I've heard he is already very crisp in this dept. Going through spring will be vital and I think he'll start. Carter, Cooper, Norwood, Bell, Black etc. Lots of potential in the vertical attack.

I don't think he that he will start, I think that he gets playing time though. He would have to beat out White, Bell, Norwood, Carter, and Shinn; I am not ripping his abilities, its just that there is a lot of depth.

Agreed. A couple recruiting "afterthoughts" seem to surprise people each year. I think Freitag could get some time at H-back. Also, Tyler Hayes -- hasn't been talked about very much, even though he was pretty highly ranked -- could be another one to watch.
